In Accounting especially public accounting, not having your degree isn’t really an option. Finish your degree, do internships as they are available and you’ll find a place.
We've definitely seen some layoffs but honestly the public side is desperate for employees. Agree with others, continue your education, do internships.
Accounting is not difficult to infiltrate in my opinion. An accounting degree would be the bare minimum for consideration across many job postings. The path to do so differs for everyone but, for me, an internship during my last 2 years of college was my entry point. As a suggestion, don't box yourself in, be open...I have observed many to naturally pursue firms only (public accounting). There are many different opportunities that could be explored. My personal experience has been within Corporate Enterprise (10 years), having held many roles across accounting & finance. It's been a rewarding, unique experience that has allowed me to incrementally grow throughout my career. Best of success!
In Accouting firms and most of companies would require a bachelor degree, there isn’t a choice and yes we can get paid off or can be fired if we don’t perform as expected even we have a master’s degree and a CPA. However, I feel it’s just the nature of any field, it’s just competitive. Just finish your degree and see what’s the next step. Having a degree or CPA is never the end of the story, it’s just the beginning.
Try Robert half if you’re just looking for work to get money and get experience in the accounting field
Thanks
To get into, public accounting has never been less competitive, not to say it’s super easy. You still need the bachelors at a minimum, have to have some level of interpersonal skills (to land the sought after roles) and show you have some level of drive/ability to handle stress. But I’d also say it’s never been easier to keep your job. Being let go still happens, but no where near at the rates it used to. The tolerance for moderate/low performers is much higher today than it was even 6 years ago.
Thanks
Get your EA. It’s a much faster process and you’d
be credentialed and able to represent taxpayers.
Apply big4 or join internship.
Get the degree first or you will be pigeonholed into A/R or A/P type positions. Also, for any accounting job you apply to, you will be competing against others with a degree and perhaps no experience yet or those with a bachelor’s or even a masters with some experience. Focus on getting the degree over any "potential " obstacles.
You definitely need to have a bachelors degree to get hired to work for a public accounting firm. Since you already have tax experience you might also find an employer who has a generous tuition reimbursement program. I attended graduate school while working full-time. It is something to consider.
