I could be a minority opinion here - but do you all feel stunts debase our craft? No other industry would do this. I can’t imagine an architect building a bridge to bamboozle a firm into giving him a shot. Seems like it introduces extra steps and expectations into an already tough job market.
One more thing @CW... By my count you’ve currently got my, a CD’s, an ACD’s, someone from DAVID, a senior art director, and a few other creative’s attention. With a post on Fishbowl you’ve already accomplished more than 99% of stunts.
Drop your book in here. We may not work at your dream agency, but we may be hiring.
most times those stunts just scream desperation and are not well received. maybe yours is great, but just saying.
Coach
I’ve worked at Goodby and WK at points in my career...98% of the creatives you’d meet just got in with their portfolio.
I’m glad you’re confident, but when you use language like “I’m ready to make the jump to the elite.” it seems a tad condescending IMO
Maybe don’t use that language in emails or interviews unless you’re sure that’s the language your “elite” agencies use.
3 years in the industry probably means you’re a junior looking to go mid level? Make sure you display that you are willing and have the capacity to learn and improve

thank you
Hey, I had a few of dream agencies recently reach out and you don’t need stunts to get attention. Make good work and get it out there. They’ll come.
Networking, networking, networking.
If you think this stunt is the way to go, I applaud your commitment and wish you the best of luck.
But this industry is so small, you're never more than a couple people away from your dream shop. So now and in the future, continue to invest in forging relationships. They will open doors anywhere.
Maybe do something for a cause or a brand, not for the agency? I work on side projects a lot and it helps at my current agency and with networking but I'm not gonna make a campaign specifically tilted towards wk or droga. Just make work you like and send to a CD or recruiter.

This is the move.
1) Make an incredibly impressive side project that shows off your unique way of thinking.
2) Send it to an agency that likes that kind of thinking.

I hope the stunt wasn’t you chilling at Pelosi’s desk.

she had some questionable browsing history
Can I ask what you mean by “spend some time and money on a creative PR stunt...”? Because if you’re spending your own money, it’s not worth it.
I mean you do you! I’ve rarely heard it being successful or worth it to dump your own money for eyeballs. But prove me wrong.
Let me know when your “dream job” turns out to be a nightmare

we all get abused but i have noticed that when ADs or designers get fucked they really get fucked. hang in there, friend...
Please don’t do a stunt. For every good stunt you hear about, there’s about a million really cringey ones. I remember a CD telling me about the pizza delivery guy showing up with a portfolio and it was a total turnoff
Your time would be better spent doing a cool campaign that captures someone’s attention. Remember the Netflix spoilers from earlier in the year? Bet those students are employed somewhere good now.
DM me your book.

Student awards only matter if you're still a student.
Three years on, I'd expect your book to be showing signs of award worthy work. If you don't have that, a stunt probably won't get you in, no matter how good it is.
Remember the guy who tattooed RGA on his face?
He only lasted there 4 months and now is a junior art director at havas.

i would consider all the produced work in my book conceptual and good. the top piece got one show recognition and press
I seem to remember an article about a student who invested in some highly targeted google ads to reach individuals their dream agency that were effective. Personally I put some time and money in to self promo kits when I was in school that helped me land interviews and a couple of awards. So if you’re still early in your career it could be worth a shot, I just wouldn’t recommend sinking your last $5 in to it if you’re up against a wall. And if it gets picked up in the press it could open doors to other agencies even if you don’t get your dream job interview.

Good luck OP.
Probably also worth considering that even if you do get in by these means, you’ll likely be known as “the person who did [whatever you’re thinking about doing].”
So if you paint yourself gold and stand outside in the rain...that’s what people will think of you.
OP- were you the guy who sent the Venmo request to a Chad Broude? If so I stand corrected, that was solid.
no, but that is in the lines of the kind of project i was thinking of. clever, not cringe.
but major props to that dude. made me super jealous. hope he gets that gig!

thanks y’all. haven’t spent any money/done anything yet, but have been crafting the idea and creative behind it for a while now, and other creatives i’ve shown it to seem to think it would be awesome.
i’m fully confident in my abilities as a creative, so i would love to just keep fighting the good fight and get there eventually, but after 2 layoffs and a few years in i am getting jaded, especially with the current state of the job market. also, i know some people who have had luck with stunts
Griner gets a lot of attention, any of the other trade people can do the same for you and probably have less people on them.
As someone at one of the agencies you probably have in mind, I would never hire you over the other candidates in front of me on the basis of a stunt. I wouldn’t even interview you because of it.
The people telling you it’s a good idea are trying to make you feel better. It’s not a good idea. It’s a bad idea.
Have to do what?

for anyone concerned, i will not be tattooing my face or painting myself gold. or fixing myself to a billboard. or disguising myself as a pizza delivery person (even though that does sound kind of fun). the stunt would be purely digital, and non-invasive to all!
Report back afterwards. Rootin’ for ya.
