I would seriously question if you have any perspective on the impact you can have.
Job? 1 man, impacting others across the world thousands of years later.
Jonah? Actively tried to make no impact. Did it anyway.
Serve in the environment you find yourself. You may not be the one to evangelize thousands, but you might convert him/her sho does.
Dont overthink it. Be thankful, do right, make disciples.
OP I get it. I’ve often struggled thru over a decade in consulting whether this is the “kingdom work” as opposed to something more tangible like a teacher or doctor. I’ll submit to you three dimensions I’ve learned along the way that has strengthened my soul.
1. Paraphrasing Colossians 3:23 whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord and not man. That means even consulting can be an act of worship to God as we do it with integrity, faithfulness, and excellence.
2. God has positioned you to influence those with whom you interact: coworkers, juniors, supervisors, clients and others. You can demonstrate the love of Christ to them and bear witness to Him, and I’ve personally seen occasions where God opens the door to share the gospel to those in need.
3. Jeremiah 29:7 seek the prosperity and peace of the city to which I have carried you into exile. There is a meta-assignment of human flourishing that God calls us to unto His glory and we partner with HS to see that come forth. That means whether our project is to make government more effective or efficient, or accelerating the supply chain for COVID vaccine, or bringing health back to capital markets for corporations and small business owners, we participate in the shared human experience, unto the glory of God.
Lastly, I earnestly believe that God invited us into His story m, even in the consulting world. When you feel his voice or your vocation as distant, keep seeking Him and He will honor your prayer and reveal himself to you.
To be candid, I don’t think my career in consulting fits into my God-given purpose: I primarily work in operational diligence for PE firms.
My vocation is to be a father and husband while trying my best to set an example for my children on what it means to be a good Catholic. It’s hard and I often fall short. I pray for forgiveness and try to do better.
I’m really trying to focus on loving my neighbor. A recent homily asked my parish to challenge ourselves. Do you love your neighbor? What about the homeless, mentally ill or drug addicted? What are you doing to help those people?
Consulting provides a life where we’re not super stressed about money, can afford parochial school, donate to causes important to us and live a half way decent life.
Post consulting, I’m 100% in for restorative justice ministry but I fear that may not be till retirement
Praying for you, fast and pray. Keep reading the Bible. Isaiah 22:22.
A lot better, thank your for asking! Slowly learning that my purpose is not necessarily what I do but rather who I am in the process and how I can best serve Christ where I am :)
Agreed with C1's list. God doesn't need a voice, he needs disciples. Do you work as He would lead, and people will notice. Stand the gap for justice, sit with someone whose lost, smile when its really difficult.
Wow thank you for taking the time to share this. Truly appreciate it. And #3 is very enlightening for me as I haven’t looked at it that way before. Will definitely keep praying and seeking Him. Thanks again!
