MBB hires plenty of fresh PhD grads with no prior experience. At BCG base would be 165, TC ~200. Happens all the time. PM1, no need for an “in” if your “in” is your advanced degree program at a target school
Exact same as post MBA consultant (~200K year 1).
TC - base is 165
As a PhD myself, yes this is common for MBB. We hire smart people. You come in at the same tenure as an MBA. Learn everything else on the job.
Same as an MBA
Just want to know for myself, how does getting a PhD in chemistry help you land a job at a consulting firm?
Not sure if this is relevant, but I was talking to my dermatologist and he said a few of his buddies from med school went to McK opposed to pursuing medicine. I feel like at that level of consulting, those firms value raw intelligence
Yah we have a lot of PhD generalists but we also entire armies of nerds selling work that benefits from a specialty degree, especially in healthcare and industrial goods. PhD is equivalent to MBA for all comp structure. We do get slightly more / different training in the first year. After that it is the same career track.
Would caveat that Bain is the least likely of the MBBs to hire a PhD with no business background and add that LEK may also be a viable option since it's a STEM PhD.
Yeah I'm sure your friend who just spent all his time getting a PhD in chemistry is a shoe in for a $200K a year consulting job with literally no experience. Are you going to be real with him or is it gonna take the 6 months of unemployment for it to hit him? He better have some sort of "in" if this is his game plan...
MBB recruits in PhD programs. Each has their own programs just for this (eg Bain Advantage, McKinsey Insight, Bridge to BCG). Bain admittedly targets PhDs the least, but during my recruiting cycle I knew two PhDs (one chemistry, one bio) who ended up at Bain.
My year in grad school (chemistry), had about 40 people and five have gone to consulting (four at MBB).
Thanks all!!
