Hi all, I am in need of advice from women. I was made redundant while I was pregnant and due to circumstances I did not look for work. My child is now 1 and I feel like I am ready to go back to work.

I have found it challenging to get to that next stage and I am unsure if that is because I have a child and I am being too transparent with the recruiters, Can you help me and guide me in how to narrate my situation.

yes I know market is horrible, but I feel this issue is beyond the market.

Never disclose personal info during the interview process. Ask questions about flexible work and time off but do not say why and legally they cannot ask. Do your research on if a company is 'parent friendly' ahead of time so you do not need to ask in the interview.

I would say you need to take of because of family issues that needed your attention. At the same time you were keeping up with your skills by taking classes, etc and upgrading your skills for potential new opportunities. And now you feel you are ready for it.

Discussing your personal/ family issues is not the recruiters business although they are entitled to ask why there is a gap. By talking about you pregnancy and child you may be encouraging bias / reservations in their mind which very likely will not be helpful for you.

like

I would not disclose that I was pregnant or even that I have a child. Keep it to time off for family reasons, and also say something about how you kept your skills current. If they get pushy for details, I would say it was a planned break for personal matters and explain that you are fully available and committed now. Better safe than sorry. I would rather be fully transparent too, but that doesn’t always go in our favor. Good luck out there.

You are too honest for this wicked world.

Every mom friend I have does not list gaps in their resume. They create a role based on what they did during that time. For example, one of my mom friends has "Domestic Home Manager" as the role title and she lists administrative tasks, homeschooling, logistics, etc. :)

Yeah, it gets frustrating after a while. Don’t let it discourage. You got a easy couple hundred applications myself and only a few interviews and that’s just after understand how some of the work apps work.

In your CV, cover it by talking up by talking about any certifications you may have taken or white papers etc and put just the year. Also you should put together a job specific cover letter where you can talk about your experiences in the last year - including challenges - and try to show how that has shaped you in being the perfect candidate for the job.

Currently on maternity leave from a small firm with no may leave benefits. Would love to become legal aid duty counsel to get better with life balance and mat leave benefits for kid #2. But I hear it's next to impossible to get a full time position except by starting on contract. Anyone in Toronto have any insight about becoming a family law duty counsel?

I received an offer and asked about their parental leave. I don't plan on having kids anytime soon but would like to in 3-5 years and hope I can start a long-term career here. Was that a weird question to ask? The company initially responded that they are rewriting it so I didn't get much detail.

I am not from the US and taxes overwhelm me; the first few years I did them with TurboTax and it was fine but then I entered a domestic partnership and had a baby. I also bought a house (that I don’t live in), so I went to H&R Block to give it a try assuming they could advise me on optimizing my return, it seemed that they are completely transactional as the person is just typing numbers in a form. Any recommendations on how to navigate personal taxes with an actual advisor?

I’m in an interesting dilemma. Very interested in leaving my company, but I am also going through IVF. I know most new jobs require a year wait before you can go on maternity leave. Does anyone know a great company to work for that does not require this? Obviously, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, but if this works, I don’t want to accept a job and not be paid for maternity leave because I am doing this solo. Appreciate all the help!
