I would maybe do reading groups? So basically, split them into smaller discussion groups, and float around. Give each group a "theme" to look at to guide the discussion - not sure if something like that would work?
I am a big believer in Socratic seminars - I would start with teacher questions and slowly release to student written questions. Seminar engages everyone - which is why I love it - I used to love to do mine with an “ inner” circle that discusses and the other half of the class is in the outer circle - leave one “ hot seat where outer circle peeps can pop in and out
Maybe pair them up so they can divide the work without the others getting embarrassed or finding a way to shirk their work. Pair the high ones with the low ones, and let the low ones have more of a speaking role.
