This is a great question. I have limited knowledge here, but I believe to teach at university you need a masters. At least for full time. Adjunct may be different. If you get super high up they may make an exception, but my guess is that would be ECD/CCO types. Good luck!
If you can be ok with making a lot less money you can teach adjunct. I did as a senior copywriter at a big university. It was very fun.
The bad news is, there’s a very slim possibility of becoming a tenured professor anywhere, ever. Read up on the associate professor situation most PhDs are stuck in. It’s sad
‘Aging out’? How so?
You must be new here.
I got a teaching gig after meeting a head of design department at the networking event. I told him that I always wanted to teach but I only have an associate degree and lack any academia experience, his reply was “I’ve got plenty of academic design educators here already, I need someone with real world experience”. So, like in many cases, if you have a personal connection, you can bypass bureaucracy.
I got an adjunct gig at a local art school with a BA and 10 years of industry experience. The pay was ridiculously low, but I loved teaching. Sadly, they eventually phased out my class, but I was kind of relieved. I was teaching a junior-level CW class for design students who only took the class because it was a requirement for graduation, so attendance and effort were not great.
You can teach adjunct with a BA and usually about 10ish years experience. If you want to teach adjunct, try applying at state schools as those gigs are more steady and will pay a bit more than community college or two year schools. If you want to become faculty with full benefits, you almost always now need an MFA or MA with more years of professional work experience. I have an MFA and taught at the undergrad level at a state university of 40K students. Be ready to take a huuuuge pay cut though.
