As a therapist myself, I am attempting to pivot into tech. After all of the care that we provide mentally, as many of my clients have high ranking /management experience, I realize that we are like teachers, essential but undervalued. I barely reach 6 figures and behavioral/social science seems to be more valuable in tech than what one on one therapy provides, monetarily speaking. These 2 years have shown me that our value as therapists are taken for granted and extremely underpaid. $200 for a watch, bag, shirt, hair, massage....easy peazy!! $200 for a session of mental health...."🏃♂️🏃♀️" on to the next one!
I think you’re going to continue to see increases in APCs as there continues to be a shortage and increasingly competitive market for physician recruitment. As for the comp they are seeking, that’s free market economics. When you know your services are in demand, it enables you to seek more for them. This has historically been the case on the physician side as it relates to some specialties.
I left a toxic work environment to take a leave of absence. A pandemic has a way of helping one gain perspective on what really matters. The last straw was hearing from our "leadership" that palliative care is a net loss to institution in the middle of a pandemic no less; there was no recognition of cost savings, prevention of lawsuits. She could not articulate any potential benefit; a stunning betrayal of our team.
Sounds like a tough situation. Being on the administrative side I’m definitely seeing a lot things fall by the wayside due to financial constraints. Capital is extremely tight and everyone is having to do more with less. Add in the collective burnout and I think we have a recipe for disaster.
I’ve seriously considered leaving my field all together (maybe to be a SAHM for awhile since I’m not sure what else I’d like to do). The past two years have shown how much greed there can be in healthcare and this just isn’t the same mission I was pursuing when I first entered the field. It’s disheartening. I used to wake up every day excited to go to work, now I’m burnt out and miserable from being stretched thin and dealing with a lot of selfishness from coworkers and management. I’m over it :(
I resigned my position as a pharmacist to become an LPC supervisee (for about 1/3 of my previous pay) last year. My shift in perspective started before the pandemic (started my masters in counseling in 2018), but the pandemic pushed me to live my convictions and let go of my preferences (for an easy and cushy life).
