Given the new rules on the ability to roll some to a Roth IRA, I don’t think you’ll regret what you invest there for their future. I do $250 a paycheck for each of my kids.
I did $3k per year/child from my bonus and stopped when I thought I would get to $120k at college age. I pretty much hit that and which I had saved more. Both kids are at more expensive schools.
Same boat would love to know as I am planning to open 529 soon.
I set myself the goal to get to around $200k per child.
I’m assuming 7% annual return and with that it requires $500 per month per child.
I started right when each of my kids were born.
Since I started I’m outpacing the 7%, but the stock market has also been doing really well the last few years.
The contribution to 529 is state tax free, correct?
Believe it technically depends on state, but yes it generally serves as a deduction
Fidelity offers a 529 credit card that contributes 2% of your purchases to the account. We had 3 kids and 3 accounts. Fidelity allows the allocation of your choosing to multiple accounts. Due to the age spread, I think we did something like 50-30-20.
Also, anytime your kid(s) gets money for birthdays, Christmas, etc. Deposit it into the 529.
Lastly, when it came time for our oldest to go to college, she didn’t need the money because of scholarships/grants. Fidelity allows you to rollover the unused money to siblings accounts with no penalties or fees.
No kids, no 529, no problem. 😁
