I am burned out working as an SDR. I work for a small Tech startup and have been trying to plot on a way to become a Sales Engineer. I love Tech Sales, just not a fan of cold calling anymore. I really enjoy interacting with people and can easily grasp new technology. How do I transition? I would really like to hear from people who made the pivot to Sales Engineer from an SDR if you exist out there. All Ideas are welcome!

I wasn’t SDR, but I did transition from consulting to SE. if I was in your shoes, I would consider building a mock demo video and include it in my application to stand out. Being an SDR, I’m sure you also have good experience to talk about account expansion strategies you can showcase during interviews.

This is super helpful! I never thought of that, but it makes total sense. Showing value and doing something to stand out may be the ticket! Thanks so much for this!

I was mentoring an SDR at my previous company who successfully transitioned to an SE role. It CAN happen, but note - he pulled it off after changing companies. It might be much more difficult to stay at the same company and make this move.

Thank you for this. While I love the company I work for, I'm fully prepared to switch if that's what it takes. Great advice!

I don’t want to miss the right person because of my bias, so im wondering how many healthcare related AMs have healthcare/clinical experience… thanks in advance!

Never been in an SE or consulting or B2B sales role before but have a referral at Salesforce and have been in some informal conversations. I’m starting to freak out a bit now that maybe I can’t do it. I have a tech background so can handle that part, but perhaps strategy may be difficult. I feel like I was straight up lied to during the interview process. “lots of opportunities to hit quota”. I’m sitting here with only one demo two months after joining the company. it looks like our team has only two people doing demos, and demos are only happening once every two weeks. At this rate, I don’t think I’ll be even close to hitting OTE. Are there any other companies hiring right now? I’ll have a discussion about my concerns with my manager soon, but there’s too many red flags here.
