Honestly I've heard of much worse from other people I know who have been searching, like 10-12 months! I think if you're looking to improve your approach, you could start expanding your job search to other industries or different kinds of roles. But I would also suggest that you really turn to your network and try to find job openings where you can get a referral from someone who works there. It goes a long way!!
By now you have probably just about exhausted the "apples to apples" jobs -- those similar to what you were doing before the layoff. If you haven't done so yet, it is time to start looking at "oranges" -- sales jobs that use the same skills but in a different field. You may also want to look at a cauliflower or cabbage -- something entirely different, but available. I may be Capt. Obvious, but after 8 months maybe your old job is available again. Companies are supposed to contact their laid off employees when new jobs are available, but I'm not sure they do.
Did you ask why you didn’t get it? I would ask and confirm what could help you the next round or new opp to get an offer. Wonder if the opps you considered actually ended up being filled or killed?
I've not gotten responses to that question. You can barely get the recruiters to respond when you are still be considered!!
I've had similar results, I think we both need to expand our search to other industries. But I have several friends that have 10+ years of great software and cloud sales experience who took 1 year to find new roles.
Networking seems to be key. My friend works for a IT cloud company and is sending my resume to the Director of Customer Success. This would be a new role for me but it’s similar to an account manager.
