Presidential debates start next year?
Hi fishes,
I am planning a switch so was going through some salary data for a software engineer. My ex-senior manager recommended me a website: Growceed.com which helped me a lot in getting clarification about a lot of things but I am in doubt whether the average salaries of software engineer mentioned on Growceed.com really that much in top MNC companies.

I think it’s really about what you’re trying to learn in your career at this point. Startups give you lots of learning opportunities but they’re not always set up with the best leaders in the area you’re covering. What can result is you learning things, but not necessarily learning the ‘best way’ to do things. This isn’t always true but there’s some merit to this in my experience.
Amazon will definitely show you ‘the Amazon way’ which is certainly helpful in your growth. There’s also a reasonable chance that startups will value you more with your Amazon experience should you choose to go into that space post acquiring some solid MAANG company experience
That’s the ticket. Amazon is a great shop. Tons to learn.

One great thing about working at Amazon is that there are so many resources available to help you learn and grow professionally. It can be a great place to get experience and to learn skills that are outside of your current expertise. So, if you want to scale your own business over time, you can find ways to learn what you need to learn about doing that from the various resources within Amazon for free while working there.
Amazon Business is a huge focus right now so that is a promising group to go into.
Amazon on your resume is a huge benefit when interviewing.
Totally agree.

I worked at a startup before definitely would say title inflation lol
I would say Amazon because of the job security. The oversaturation of the tech industry is catching up and a lot of smaller tech start ups are going through furloughs right now.
Only because of this, I say Amazon. I typically recommend a smaller company because you'll learn more and wear more hats. I'm 25 and switched to a smaller company around 3 years ago, my salary has jumped over $50k in the last 3 years. There are less politics, no salary caps, less approvals needed and so many more unspoken benefits w/ smaller companies. There can be more drama however - especially with family owned businesses.
I don’t think you should ever work for a startup unless you get equity. And this is coming from someone who loves working at startups.

Great advice!
I talk to candidates a lot, and the biggest regret I hear from people a lot of times is that they didn’t take risks early in their career. A lot said they had opportunities at startups, etc. that they passed up, and once they got married and had a family, they weren’t able to explore those opportunities.
I’d just say that if you’re ever going to consider something “risky,” that it’s easier to do so earlier on your career. Good luck 👍
I’m not sure how leveling is done but 140k ote for L5 sounds really low unless ur in warehouse which may have different leveling?. Most l5 should make 200+ in T2 or T1.5 city like Austin

Moving to Austin will not be a problem. I’m from Miami Fl and have purchased an apartment here which I would be happy to rent out and make some cash on it. Have relatives here that can do property mgmt. for context I am 23 and looking to scale my own business with time. Not sure which option to pursue yet have until end of July
Is the total compensation for both comparable?
140 OTE seems low for an L5
