I dont know if social work is for me and I am looking to get out of direct service.

What would be some career options to consider?

Any that you believe would be good to pursue with a social work background?

You could potentially try to work in admin. That way you could stay in social work but get out of case management/direct service. Outside of the industry I would try working for a nonprofit or advocacy group that works towards patient welfare without direct service.

I really appreciate this, thank you!

There’s often opportunities with healthcare organizations pertaining to screening people for the appropriate level of care. I have a friend who does this and enjoys it. She travels around to area hospitals and does screenings/ assessments 1-3 times with a person, and makes recommendations for their care. Also insurance companies might have similar roles.

Hi! I’m Head of Insights at an agency in London. I built a team of 4 and oversee and train junior and mid-level insights analysts. I’ve been told that I’ll be promoted to Director next year but I might need to move to NYC because of my husband’s job. I’m a bit worried about finding a job similar to the one that I have now in NYC, especially because I’m Latin and I know how competitive New York can be. Any thoughts and recommendations?

Anyone worked for an in-house agency? Pros and cons? Did/do you enjoy it? Would you recommend it? More stable? More money?

If you could work at an agency for the rest of your career, would you do it? Or do you see being a professional creative as a means to another career altogether?

Additional Posts in Social Workers & Therapists

What do you guys think about apps like BetterHelp and Talkspace? I understand they might have real therapists working on their content, but a lot of the marketing I see is so vague and broad that it feels like a lie. Seems like "This app got rid of my anxiety with a 30-minute automated text questionnaire" is the new "This tea made me lose 20 pounds in two weeks!" Just seems a little fad-like and money grabby to me. Thoughts?

Have you ever dealt with a colleague that believes in extremely (in my opinion) outdated or even just false claims and treats them as scientific facts? I work with several older men but one of them practices "provocative therapy" as in you just play the devil's advocate with your patient and side with the negative half of their thinking. In theory I could see this working situationally, but as a whole philosophy regardless of the patient's issue I think it's ridiculous.

What misconceptions do you think people have about social work? or therapy?
Mine is my family still believes that only "sick" or unhappy people need to see a therapist, so they don't understand why I go to one since I have a job and a family. It's oldschool thinking and pretty annoying tbh.
