I get so annoyed when partners keep assigning me non-billable work to do and then I get scolded because of my billable hours… I’m still doing my job when I’m doing “non-billable” work I shouldn’t be penalized at the end of the year for being a junior associate who can’t say no to people.

Seriously. I get told to prioritize billable work. But then I got bitched out by a partner because I kept asking for extensions on nonbillable work (which I hadn't asked for or affirmatively agreed to) because billable work kept coming up.

like

I just keep reminding them that billable work takes priority as they have requested. Even if they never requested it, rarely have I been questioned bc partners say all sorts of crap they don’t remember. Then when they tell me they didn’t say that, I shrug my shoulders and say really? So you don’t want me to prioritize billable work?

Then, in addition to the above, start finding more junior attorneys to pass that stuff onto.

This! I used to spend 30-40hours working on ppts for my partners’ presentation…then they came in and ask why I didn’t reach my billable target that month…

Don’t do non-billable work. Tell them to respectfully pound sand.

I wish I could but when partners look at my hours and say they’re too low and I’m turning down non-billable work at the same time… I’m not sure what my response should be at that point 😳

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

That awkward feeling when you go out to lunch with your team and your manager asks for a split check.

How do you deal with a manager / junior partner who is always nitpicking and questioning why you did what you did, or telling you what you did is the wrong way to do things? It’s generally prefaced with them only doing this to help you grow, but has the exact opposite effect on me. And then when you try to explain your POV, you’re tagged as being defensive. Generally ends me with saying I’m sorry. No other partners at the firm have ever raised any concerns on my communications or work product.

I feel set up to fail & feel we should be focusing on a handful of SMEs and only our sexiest topics. Any advice on mitigating unrealistic expectations for coverage? Anyone handled similar problems in the past?

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

Do I work at a toxic workplace?

We had a team touchbase where we as a group were asked our concerns regarding year end. I raised my concerns about staffing/expectations (the team is 75% new) since last year was demanding with us being up to 1 AM the day before deadline.

My director was on the call but not my VP. My VP reached out today and said he doesn’t appreciate hearing such comments on the grapevine but I was confused b/c all i did was answer the question I was asked.

I’m a new associate working for a well-known defense attorney in my state. On one hand, I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn from one of the best, but he also excoriates and belittles me for my mistakes. Any advice on how much it tolerable? I am here to learn and advance my career but he can be pretty nasty. (My mistakes are no worse than you’d expect a 1st year associate to make, in case you’re all wondering if I’m a major screw-up who deserves it) I leave work feeling a foot tall.

Do you ever feel like people treat you differently at your firm because of your age? Like reverse ageism? As if you don't know enough or aren't competent enough yet? Just curious if others have ever felt this way.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
