I had a similar situation a few years ago. Manager wanted me to do something illegal/unethical. Decided to tell me in person instead of having it documented . When I told her I wasn't comfortable with it and wanted to run it by a higher up, she then "pretended " as if I "misheard/misunderstood" what she said. I said "No, I heard you loud and clear". I never looked at her(or trusted her) ever again.

My wife and I just had our second child, and we have also been dealing with her cervical cancer diagnosis. It has been a stressful year, to say the least.
