What’s the position?
Sounds like your boss values your work ethic and knows you’d benefit the company in the role. They may not have considered if the switch would be beneficial for you.
On the other hand, potentially your boss knows the pay scale and it is an increase. Does the new role have room for growth you don’t have in your current role?
It’s not a bad idea to look into the role, get all the details and compare. You can always decline if the switch isn’t a good fit for whatever reason.
What is your relationship with your boss like and how are your performance reviews?
Your boss could be trying to offload you because you aren’t great in your current role. They could know that layoffs are coming for your group and want you to get somewhere safer. They could honestly believe you would be good at it and the company would benefit. Or something else.
I’d try to have a conversation with your boss. Preferably face to face so you can try to read body language.
My role would need to be backfilled if I changed positions. Had conversations with both my boss and her boss. The CAO thought it would be a good career development role for me. I work for a publicly traded company and no layoffs are expected. We still are hiring like crazy
You should have conversations with your boss, mentors, and other leaders you trust around how this role can help you move up or gain new skills or whatever your goals are.
Update. Still no word from HR. I had to submit my resume and have interviews with five people and no response. Not sure where to go from here
