Just tell them you can’t start till June 19th (June 18th being a holiday). Or you can start but you have a trip booked you would still like to go on. You could be honest and say you booked a trip already, or you could lie and say garden leave or you promised to stay and complete a project. Usually, when discussing an offer with the recruiter or Hr you discuss start dates.
If they say no, you can decide what’s more important to you.
Assuming this is the US, isn't the holiday June 19th? (Juneteenth)
Here's a suggestion for how you could approach this situation. I would send a template for the email you could send explaining your ordeal while still been reasonable, professional and ethical.
Subject: Vacation Plans and Start Date
Dear [Hiring Manager],
I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to reach out regarding my upcoming start date of April 22nd. I'm excited about the opportunity to join the team and contribute to [company name].
However, I recently realized that I have a pre-planned vacation scheduled from May 23rd to June 17th, with flights and accommodations already booked I understand the importance of being fully committed to my new role, and I want to ensure that my vacation plans don't disrupt the team or our projects.
I'm willing to be flexible and explore options to mitigate any inconvenience caused by my absence, such as working remotely during that period, extending my probation period, or taking unpaid leave. I'm open to discussing what works best for the team and the company.
I understand if this situation is not ideal, and I apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. Please let me know how you would like to proceed, and I'm happy to discuss further or provide any additional information you may need.
Thank you for your understanding and consideration.
Best regards,
[Your Name]
Very well structured
Jesus, where are you going for that long? To mars and back?
You need to be transparent. You have a life. If they really want you they'll understand. If they don't you need to think about if that is the culture and energy you want to work for.
Be careful when negotiating if you want the job.
Mention that you will accept the job and want to discuss with them the start date. Talk over the phone to HR or the hiring manager and see if they are open to a later start date. Lots of companies need immediate hires and telling you cannot start till June 19 will be enough to withdraw your offer.
Three options.
1. They need you immediately and you have to cancel your trip.
2. You can start in April and take a negative vacation (I have seen this happen).
3. They can delay your start and you will start im June.
Nobody likes surprises from someone they just hired. If you want to build trust with them they need to know ASAP. Should have been communicated when they asked your start date availability early in the interview process.
Agreed
Tell them that you can't start till June 18
I have done this with two jobs and once I got the offer told them I already had a trip booked and could start on insert date here. Wasn’t a problem. Have also also started jobs where I had a trip already scheduled several months ahead and they let me take it without using pto since I wouldn’t have accrued it yet and basically gave me a free week of vacation.
Absent an urgent need by the firm, which they should have communicated in the beginning, isn’t the start date usually negotiated with the prospective candidate? I don’t see why this is an issue. I have never been told what my start date is, it’s always been asked and I’ve always led the decision on when that would be.
I would accept the offer and tell them that you already had this trip planned prior to going through the interview process and that you would be willing to do all it takes prior to and after you return from vacation. If allowed, you will take your laptop and try to address urgent concerns during the vacation period. Overall just try to impress upon them that you will do your best to mitigate any inconvenience
What’s the job title?
Personally, I would secure your chances to be in the seat in the job, as a priority. (I am assuming the job is more important than the vacation). Then, at the appropriate time just before you start (time this prudently, when it’s very late for anyone to be rescinding a job offer and opportunity costs are high to do so, yet not so late where employers get annoyed) or during the start when you are working, tell them you are going for vacation. You can say It was originally planned for a 3+ weeks (and support this with credible socially acceptable reasons), but also tell them clearly that if necessary, you’re prepared to be flexible and minimise the time away if it’s very important you are around for that period — and prepare to be flexible about your original plans. You could also mention that taking leave now means you’ll not be taking leave later in the year (assuming your employer gives you a set number of vacation leave days each year). This all assumes keeping the job is important and more so than the vacation. Just a thought…
There shouldn’t be conflict, start the new job and instead of disclosing the vacay/wedding trip take a bereavement leave, people understand wedding but something that hits harder those empathy points when there is a loss in the family.
Citi 2 I feel sorry for you and for those you work with that you hold that opinion. Money does attract the unscrupulous. But while I’ve run into a lot of dishonest people in this business, they are hardly the majority.
You didn't tell them during the interview?!
Yeah I wouldn’t mention this in an interview. IMHO not relevant til you get an offer.
It is not uncommon that you tell your new employer that at you booked/paid vacation plans for the time prior to their offer. I been in the same situation more than once. And it has not been an issue. They will not pay you for the time off but will accommodate your request. It is very important that you disclose your planned vacation asap or with your acceptance.
Why wasn’t this discussed during the interview?
Focus on your new job and forget your vacation now
Just tell straight to them,Sure They will understand that
I would ask if you can start after the vacation or if they are willing to accept those dates and start you sooner and give you the time off. We are in an employers market right now, so don't wait until the last minute to say something, especially with you needing to be out that long.
Employers understand that people have planned vacations and usually accommodate when possible.
Hmmm I would cancel the vacation tbh.
