I make about $150k and have $37k in credit cards and loans, not including student loans. I’m now following Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover plan to pay off debt, but I’d like your opinions on my car loan—

I have a BMW that’s worth less than 20k. I’m still making payments on it, ~$840/mo and have a balance of ~$23k. I’m upside down on it, I think is the term. I know Dave Ramsey suggests selling our cars to help pay off debt, but being that I’m upside down on it, should I still sell it?

you would get a personal loan of the difference , or if you have liquid cash for the difference. car sells for 20k private party, you have 3k , you payoff car note of 23k to get title to give to new owner. now instead of 23k debt you have 3k debt or no car debt if you used cash for difference.

the car price falls within the guidelines for car price for your income, so if you wanna keep it, that’s totally fine and your decision. if you wanna get out of debt faster than sell it.

trust the DR debt payoff process and do it. i did it and paid off 70k of student loans. it’s not a pleasant experience, but it does work. especially with your income. you can be totally debt free in less than a year or 1.5 years tops.

i don’t follow all his principles now, but his debt payoff steps do work if you work the steps.

Thanks so much! I’m considering keeping it as I don’t have the cash or the credit score to get a personal loan to cover the difference. And I would be left without a car, which I live in a small city where temps get to 115°F and makes it really hard to travel without AC. Public transit is not reliable here. I need a car but I understand it doesn’t have to be that BMW.

I’ve been very disciplined with spending, no longer using credit AT ALL and basically living like I’m broke just to throw all my extra money into paying my credit cards. I figured this could be the equivalent of the “mortgage” in his plan, but just wanted some other perspective.

The plan works best/ fastest if you follow it completely. BUT that doesn't mean that following 98% of it won't still work... just not as fast. It's up to you if the tradeoff is worth it.

Specific to the car, you can still attack the paydown, and once you have a few thousand in equity, sell it and buy a more reasonable car with cash... instead of waiting until you pay it all off.

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.

I have 17,000 vested stock options, total number of shares at the time of my contract was 4million. I’m a bit confused about share dilution and if it’s worth it for me to buy some of my stock options… thanks in adv!

In your opinion which is the best target fund to choose in IRA Roth?

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Thanks!
