I worked for 2 years before my federal clerkship and I’m so glad I did. Focus on what you are now and stay curious about the law.
I worked for a year before my district court clerkship. You don’t really need to do anything to prepare. It’s a very different kind of work environment, and it’s a lot of responsibility. I feel like it takes about six months to feel like you know what you’re doing. You will work a lot and work hard, but if you have a great judge, you will have an amazing time.
Read a ton of the judge's recent opinions to get used to the writing style. Also you can ask the clerks (or judge) if they have any recommendation for books to read. For example, I was told to read On Writing Well by William Zinsser
You should also enjoy a healthy work/life balance. I am in a comp district but we were short on judges when I first started so it was a grind. Definitely much better now. You'll probably be given a lot of responsibility and of course, expectations are high but there is a grace period. Every judge knows it takes some time (and a few opinions) to get past the learning curve. Stay positive and eager to learn
