Sorry you’re feeling this way. I’ve been in the exact same position many times. To a degree, this is certainly an unfortunate characteristic of the job. And I don’t know if there’s a way to completely solve for it.
That said, I think you should speak up and see if there may be opportunities to share the workload. Ensure that your boss is copied and aware of what you’re doing. That will help ensure that you feel less alone.
Another thing I’ve found is that my anxiety decreased over the years after I had more experience. Experience builds knowhow and confidence which in turn reassures you in your ability to tackle workload.
But you’re not wrong—this is a persistent trait in the work we do. It’s not easy and there have been times that I’ve needed therapy to cope.
Wishing you well.
Also, to add to this: I find AS level is the hardest in this career trajectory (based on my experience so far). You’re no longer just a “doer” and have more responsibilities while still having to do a large chunk of a the day to day so I found I kept constantly being pulled into too many directions when I was an AS. I’ve been an AD for over a year now and honestly, it does get better and I enjoy my role a lot more now.
I’ve learned over time to set boundaries and be constantly prioritizing based not only on what’s important but also what’s visible to higher ups and what’s impactful. When people ping me, I respond quickly to important questions but let frivolous things sit for a few hours to set the expectation. What’s urgent to someone else might not be urgent to me or the business overall so I’ll get to it when I get to it. Between this and things taking less time to do with experience, risk mitigation on problems that always tend to crop up, I don’t generally work more than 40 hours a week and never on weekends. Good luck.
In the same exact position. At my 5th agency and all my toles have been the same unfortunately. Wish things were better.
Feel the exact same way. Starting to feel like this is just the industry although have heard some agencies do have better balance. Yet to find them though.
You know what they say: "If everyone's the problem..."
This is the nature of a lot of agencies. Things tend to be less intense client-side, although I think there are downsides to that too.
It's part industry and part our way of dealing.
It took me a long time to realize it's ok to say no or manage up. And then balance a bit more. Best of luck.
