I think I’ve finally hit my breaking point and need to get meds to manage my ADHD. Can GPs write scripts or only psychiatrists? Is it worth it to go down the cerebral-esque route? TIA

GPs can write you a script, but lack expertise to help you find the right med and dosage.

likehelpful

Not true. Many GPs are able to advise in the same way that psychs can. finding the right med and dosage is largely trial and error anyway.

I would recommend seeking out a psychiatrist that has experience with ADHD. You will likely be meeting with your prescribing physician more frequently in the beginning, as you figure out the right dosage and combination of medications.

likehelpful

I believe GPs can do that. Also, look for a psychiatrists to get a second opinion, specially if you will be taking meds daily.

Where are you located and do you already have a diagnosis?

I’ve never been formally diagnosed. My parents didn’t believe in ADHD. 🫠

If you’ve never been diagnosed, you will need to get a diagnosis before you can get meds (get the report emailed to you afterwards so you can share it with doctors going forward). The process will vary based on the laws of your country/possibly state if you’re in the US so make sure you look up who is actually qualified to diagnose ADHD. If you’re in the UK, look into Right to Choose

Sometimes, I think doctors are really experts at "do as I say, not as I do". We often advise those around us to take care of themselves, but we don't do the same.

Saw my therapist this past Friday and he gave me a useful trick to build better behavior patterns. Whenever you have work to do but would rather nap or something, tell yourself 3 negative effects of the nap and 3 positive effects of doing the work. You might still take the nap, but if you can get in the habit of thinking of it negatively, you'll take less naps when you need to be doing other things.

Doesn't matter what the activities are. Could be working out vs eating more, could be socializing IRL vs wasting time in FB (lol)

Interesting. Let’s see if the uptick In cases continues to drive an uptick in hospitalizations and then in fatalities. Depends on how many of the cases are incidental or in very young people not prone to severe cases. But either way, look at the hospital capacity utilization figures! This is the untold story. Were we bending the curve to avoid unnecessary deaths due to overcrowded hospitals, or were we bending the curve to buy time for treatments and vaccine, or just to slow fatalities?

Anyone else have a need to exercise daily? A lot of people judge me in a negative way and in reality it is because my ADHD brain needs it. 1) the consistency for schedule 2) exercise can help tone down the symptoms before I sit down for the work day 3) it is the only thing I can control to make it look like I am not a mess (disorganization, interrupting) - basically trying to stay in the game at work based on perception of “having it together”.
