Pour some starch down your spine and stand up straight. She's just another human being, she isn't endowed with super-powers that she could knock you dead by staring at you. You are just as valuable to the organization as she is, despite what she might be telling you and others. She just has a raunchy, gossipy mouth that she's willing to flap to anyone who will listen. You, on the other hand, don't exercise the lesser qualities that we all possess but don't all choose to use. You can verbally spar with her, although you will never out-gossip her. Just remember that NOBODY can MAKE you feel 'less than"; nobody can be "bullied" unless they allow it. Fight back with your well-mannered presence. Next time there's a meeting that you've been left out of, wait until 5 minutes after they've been in the meeting room and then arrive with your notepad and take a seat.
You are absolutely correct. I should have never allowed myself to be put in that situation. I did actually show up at a few meetings like " hello". I just got so tired of defending myself. Looking back I realize I had the power to just leave. Being honest it was the $$. Lesson definitely learned no money is worth your self respect and health! Thanks for keeping it real!
I’ve worked as an admissions director for several nursing facilities over the years and have ptsd from abusive administrators and other management. I was racially discriminated at the last one and had a case opened with the EEOC and they sided with the facility because people were afraid to speak to them during the investigation. I left the industry and make way more money working for a nice sized healthcare insurance company. It’s been almost 2 years since I left and I regret that I didn’t leave sooner.
Often times God puts obstacles in our path to open our eyes to a situation. This was probably what happened to you. You would have stuck it out way too long. But you moved on because it was time and look where you are now. Bravo to you!
Do you have anything documented? Can you prove that you were discriminated against? It's BS that anti-discrimination laws wouldn't have some way of protecting you in this case. it sounds pretty cut and dry that she had it out to get you. If you do have any documentation or any way of showing it was unjust discrimination, I'd get a second legal opinion
Go to EEOC, BULLYING IS AGAINST THE LAW. JUST KEEP GOOD RECORDS
I’m going thru it too and I’m the only white one at wk
It’s ridiculous
Hope you documented all this.
Yes! I sure did.
I feel like this is only one half of a story. I think it’s easy to rush to the blame game instead of inflection. Termination usually only happens when there are incidents that can be proven because failure to produce these as the employer can lead to repercussions and legal fallout like what you are looking for. Best thing you can do is move forward, polish your skillset, and get thicker skin or get out of management. Nobody cares about your feelings, welcome to adulthood. People suck and letting it impact your health is only hurting you.
Sounds about right for healthcare. This is my first time working in healthcare and it is horrendous. The bullying and favoritism here is something I never encountered in all my years of working. Unfortunately what the attorney said is true. Been down that route with my wife when she had issues. Sucks...but dust yourself off and move on. Leave your honest feedback on job sites to warn others.
Same happened to me after the regional manager hired his niece! Other team mates had no choice, but to contribute, or avoid the situation. Shortly after, it happened to another team member!
I had an exact experience and in my state was told the same by several attorneys and Unemployment Compensation. I did however make it a point to find a therapist who has experience with this issue and have made sure to get the work out through reviews etc so that other people know what they are in for with that person
You are going up against a hospitals Attorney's
Document and get a second opinion. There are many attorneys that are looking for extra work. I agree with Manager 1 and get a second opinion.
Whether you're covered by Legislation for workplace bullying will depend on where you live. Do you live in Canada? The US? In Canada, you would be covered under both Federal and Provincial Legislation for bullying. Ontario has what's called "the Bullying Bill" - Bill 168. It also falls under the Workplace Health and Safety Legislation.
This is very common in the industry and unfortunately hard to contain.
Toughen up, buttercup. Welcome to the medical field. The workers and Medical fields are overworked and stressed out. If they view your abilities as slowing them down or causing them problems, they will try to run you off the job. Those type of people want you to do what they want no matter what. Just do what they want and eventually that does make you kind of their witch, but it will make you a better MedicaL employee
I disagree with the "tougher up, buttercup" advice. That means that this person should become someone who she/he is not. For her health and wellbeing, she can stay in her lane without becoming a puppet. And if it is still too caustic, it is time to move on. There are companies out there who value their team members.
Im going through the same thing... currently because i want my job back... im an rbt. And being terminated hurt me bad caused me to go into a deep depression... i say file your case with eeoc like i am doing. I pray it works out for you. If not hopefully you get something out of it monetary wise and find a better job.
I went through the same thing not in this industry but in a gym where I was an operations manager. In fact the girl that was the lead working the front desk called me after I got fired and told me that they would stay after the other operations manager as I was waiting for my gym to open as well as the club manager and her assistant and they would try to get her to come into the meetings and they would discuss how they were going to bully me the next day or throughout the week. And that is correct there is no case with this which is WRONG on so many levels. We need to do something to change this.
It ain't getting any better
Bullying in the workplace, especially healthcare, is way too common. Have had it happen at several places. Unfortunately in right to work states you can legally be terminated for any reason. I have found that calmly standing up to these types of people usually will make them back down, at least for the moment. If you are legally allowed to record others without their knowledge in your state, it’s not a bad option. Or, just place a digital recorder on the desk whenever you have an interaction with them, “just want to make sure that I’m understanding what you are asking of me so I can complete my work efficiently”. I found that after having a verbal exchange with these bullies, following up with an email outlining the conversation to clarify points that were made regarding your job performance was a great way to have things documented. Bullies usually can’t resist answering such emails and then you have a good paper trail. But, even with all of that, there’s very little you can do legally. Try filing for unemployment but without proof of what went on the employer will deny it and you won’t be able to successfully appeal it. I always looked at those types of situations as dodging a bullet. I’m sure you’re not the only one this person has acted this way with and the working environment had to be toxic as hell. Just move on with your head held high. Remember the best revenge is living well….and happy. Good luck.
You can file a complaint with the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) your county/State they will do an investigation
It has happened to me more times than I can count. Alabama needs a nursing union. It would put a stop to alot of crap!
Time to find a new job. Your mental health depends on it. Speaking from experience.
I had the exact same experience;! HR knew it and literally just let it play out. They knew one or the other would tire and they just waited to see who. For my peace of mind, I left. Best decision ever, however the organization lost an incredibly passionate person. Bullying in the nurse profession is not addressed. Fortunately for me, I have moved on to a much better leadership role, but I continue to see others still being effected by poort unprofessional nurse behaviors.
