I work for government agency and Im contemplating a departmental or even career change. 1. I had run in with a client (my 1st in a few years) that left me discouraged. 2. A few complaints from collegues that they were overwhelmed with my habit of trying to help everyone. 😒. I feel stuck between trying to help the public (my job duty) and not overwhelming my collegues who we need in order to help the public. Their burnout is in directly affects my ability to properly serve the community.

It is time to weigh the urge and your own health. Ask yourself 1) What is more important? 2) Is anyone irreplaceable? 3) Is the stress making more or less effective in your role?
I took the DRP 2.0, and a job outside of government, and have less stress, salary is less, but no more frustration from this DOGE nonsense. Miss my former coworkers, but my way-of-life is less stressful and I want to live as long and healthy as possible and as mentally, emotionally and physically capable. So ask yourself these and other questions.

Stop helping your colleagues as what you consider helping, they might consider micro managing. Stay in your own lane and let them crack on. Just focus on doing your own best work.

Thank you for your comment.

Transfering jobs within the same government, especially for an administrative assistant, should be super easy. I know a lot of people who have done that. Everyone needs admin assistants and a good one is hard to find. That said, it is unclear from your description of the problem if that will solve it. If you are trying to do too much, then you just need to set healthier boundaries. I understand that you mean well, but sometimes when you try to help everyone you end up not helping anyone.

Hi there, I would be lying if I said knew. My govt job is actually at the city level so I'm unfamiliar with usajobs and their hiring practices. Hopefully someone from that area sees your response and gives you some insight. GL. 🙏🏼

You can't help everyone even if it is your job description. I have worked for the government agency I am in for 5 years. Being from the real world, I see how government operates and what they do wrong. But my job is not to change the government but to advise the government. Do what you can do best and let others pick up what is left.

Thank you. Def needed this advice

A lot of us get into government work because we want to help people. But, it's also a job with a schedule and deadlines and time pressure and tasks have to be prioritized. It's difficult, but there are instances where we simply can't help everyone. You might want to talk to your manager, or people with a lot of experience in your department, about prioritizing things and reducing your burnout.

That is a hard spot to be in. I have a friend who constantly tells me you can’t pour from an empty cup. It’s always a lot easier to apply to myself than others, though.

This is good advice and thats what I generally try to do. But im very limited in what i can and cannot say without an attorney, yet no one else seems to want to help them...😕

If you are interested in remote part-time work for a think tank, please let me know. I know there is a company hiring, and the salary and benefits are pretty good.

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

1. Project Allocation - allocated to projects without fitment with the role or skills. No internal job portal

2. Lots of seniors in bench for long time

I’ve looked at everyone on the team with the same titles salary on the sunshine list and the lowest I see is 121k. I assume there is an OT component of some sort but also can’t confirm.
