If starting over, how I'da designed life:

- start at 18, prolly USAF, avoid service academies since no retirement
- part time degree to get in pilot training, rack up hours
- retire at 38
- part time airline or other commercial pilot for extra cash & stewardesses

I'm over 38 now and make more than a pilot but the 9-5 (sometimes 996) grind sucks lol. Will FIRE before 50.

FIRE is overrated - if you retire, you expire - unless you’ve given yourself a clear purpose. I find that too many people don’t have that North Star though

like

other perspective is it’s corporate stockholm syndrome. Of all the things in life you’ve tried and not tried, your life purpose just happened to be your current job… is your mindset

You forgot enlist in nat’l guard in a state with free tuition for guard. But pretty much spot on, I’d do the same.

I know some bachelors who use it, but if you have a family, it’s not an option

I would have not got stuck on B1s and traveled the world. I probably would have reupped instead of getting out after 4 years.

Only bases open to me were Ellsworth and Dyess

I like my path, just wish I would have done it sooner and compressed the timeline. Commission as soon as possible, go intel or cyber. Gets tons of certs. Go guard/reserve after first term. Go FAANG. Make money. Work towards retirement. Get VA pay as soon as you get out of it deserve it.

also, not getting pilot wouldn’t torpedo the whole plan, that was just for easy side gig part time flying during retirement for the stewardesses and mile high club. If no pilot then plenty of time to pursue something else (part time) or just chill in retirement at 38. Even some pilots do non-pilot things upon retirement like that Nutnfancy Youtuber, who left as LTC so got the O6 pay u were saying

Expect to work for another ~20 years. 401k fully funded and have some company stock investments maturing over the next few years, but no investments outside of that. Kids have a prepaid college plan for certain schools. Emergency fund is solid. Where should I look to start investing? I have fidelity for my 401k, would they be good to open a taxable investment account with, or are there better options?

How do you find firms/books of business to buy? All the posts on here are buyers looking for sellers. Where do you go to find someone looking to sell or retire?

Sanity check. I like a nice lifestyle. Currently make 350-550k with bonus. 53 years old. About 400k in brokerage. Another 1.9million in retirement accounts. House worth 1.2 million with loan of 625k. For retirement pension will be $2400 per mo which goes to my wife if I die for life. Another 3800k Per month estimated from Social Security. I plan on working another 10 years or so maybe less once the kids graduate college. I am this will be out in 2024. What should I be doing or thinking about?

I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
