I ask this and I am looking to see if the candidate has ambition, which I want them to have. To me, the right answer is the next job one or two levels above the one I am interviewing you for.
Right but for a senior role, that is going to translate to wanting the interviewer’s job, which is not a good thing to say.
A lot of in house departments are flat. Say you want to be proficient in the business, providing xx legal advice, seen as a trusted advisor, etc etc etc
In general learn and grow with the business, take on additional responsibilities and further develop your career.
A lot of companies have in house attorneys in either generalist/ commercial or more specialized roles. If you are interested long term in more of a department management role mention that, if you are interested long term in becoming more of a specialist (privacy, litigation, trade compliance, etc) mention that. I would be honest in your long term career interest.
They want to know if you’re going to leave the company or if you’re in it for the long haul
I think the best answer, if honest, is that you want to continue to grow and build your skill set so you can, one day, move higher into the organization.
If it’s a non-management role I’m interviewing for, I say continued growth and development within the department and to one day move into a management position. So working towards that goal within 3-5 years, which is true.
