Any Spotify people here? Noticed there’s an AM role going at the moment in the UK but not sure what experience level it is. For reference I’ve got 6 years in ad sales experience with 3 years management (both in music industry). Would this be comfortable or is it worth holding out for AD?

I've done both - and there's positives and negatives to each side (obviously). I think you have to REALLY believe in whatever the tech firm is putting out there, because at the end of the day the commitment and LOE required is like nothing you've ever seen, and usually for less money (unless you've managed to secure equity) and no benefits. IMO,it's better to work at a startup when you're mid career with some expertise rather than as a junior with not a lot of experience or knowledge - you risk missing out on some key principles and "tools" when you're in a startup environment.
Definitely not.
I think a lot of the advice here is spot on. One thing I would ad though is don't look at it as an agency versus a start up. Look at it as company A versus Company B and assess them on the merits of their culture and product. Will the start up support your career goals, set you up for success etc. if the agency does that for you then stick with them but not all agencies give you the opportunities you want.
i did as my second job - I learned a lot wearing lots of different hats. i hated the start up chaos though. pay was just ok. I would say what got me a job at a major agency (Ogilvy) was 3 years client side at a major ecom website (my first job). if it wasn't for that experience, Ogilvy would never have looked at my resume.
that's to say i would do it if you have something else solid on your resume.
Start ups have a lot of flexibility, you get the opportunity to "wear many different hats," and you have a great deal of responsibility and decision-making power. That said, I personally don't think I can compromise the security of a larger, established company to go to a startup. I need more structure in my work life for sure.
It truly depends on your experience so far, on your character, and on the actual startup. I would consider the opportunity very seriously, but you need to think if it's the right thing for you right now. I know people who have such strong drive that they have done extremely well in startups, irrespective of how junior they were, irrespective of access to fewer tools and so on. Will you be that person? Is this what you want? If yes, go for it.
No
Depends on what type of skills you want t o build. When I worked at a couple of well-established start-ups, I found the people there knew site analytics, logistics, budgeting, running SEO campaigns better than agency people. And there's more onus on doing rather than talking about doing. BUT, agency lets you see more clients and industries and to learn softer skills like persuading clients and colleagues, managing and mentoring others. And to make endless decks. 😶 Seeing tech start up was important early on , but as I moved more mid-career, found that I saw more, learned more soft skills in agency.
Sounds like career suicide in advertising. But I guess it depends on comp. You could convince me to take any title with the right comp package.
