Completely honest. They're going to find out anyway. Just say agency lost biz, product failed to launch, consolidation. It's totally normal.
Interviewing is just like the rest of our jobs -- it's all about telling a story... You need to have a story about why you left your last job... "Lost a client", "department eliminated", "typhus outbreak", whatever.
Ah. So you were fired. Say you grew from it.
Were you able to collect unemployment? If so, you were laid off.
No shame. Be honest. Great people in this biz have been laid off.
100%? Really?
Whatever the reason, you should know how you want to convey it, honestly, to your interviewer. Stumbling through a response will make it seems like you are caught off guard or worse: like you lost a job without understanding why.
Sure. You ever lay people off? It sucks. Especially when you have to lay someone off who is over 40, so then you have to let some under 40 go as well. Why'd you get laid off? Always helps if you can be honest about the reason. Or if they let go XX people. Makes it seem more of a economic thing.
This was a while ago. But here goes: I was doing great work, winning awards, was severely depressed, and a nightmare to work with. Took it out on everyone around me.... Hard things to say in an interview
Yeah I guess so. However it was in a round of cross-department layoffs. Or firings. Who knows.
Sorry but done what? If you mean fire people no. I've been advising wether to but never been in the room or involved in the process beyond that
Ah, OK. Welp, read the thing you signed. It'll tell you if you were laid off or fired.
I don't know what your situation is, OP, but I had the same. Kind of laid off for budget reasons, kind of fired for being a cranky bastard. They did give me a good severance though, so I always say something like "The severance gave me enough freedom to try x-y-z". Then I move to my book quickly there after.
I never had to, started freelancing straight away.
The thing you signed will tell you. You've seriously never done this before?
Yeah, the hard truth is they don't lay off the people they want to keep. So even a lay off is a failure of sorts. And when you're at a higher level, a lay off is also your failure of responsibility to the company. I was put into the impossible situation of being hired in a last ditch effort to keep a client (I didn't know the client had already put the agency on probation when I took the job). So, my performance was completely evaluated on whether or not they kept the business. Once the business walked out the door (holding co consolidation) I was let go. Could they have kept me and let someone else go? Sure. But why would they?
100% honest! A layoff is not fault of your own. It's the best reason to be looking for a job!
