I went down a similar path and deeply sympathize.
I spent about 7 years on the consumer side, then switched over to pharma right at the beginning of Covid.
I did well enough at it, getting promoted to group sup and making decent money, but of course I found it incredibly boring and felt like my skills were going to waste.
After two years, I moved back to a consumer agency (and took a 20k pay cut). Cut to another two years later and I’m not happy at all. The post Covid landscape for advertising absolutely sucks across the board. The work I’m doing is complete garbage, the clients are worse than ever, and I still haven’t made up for the loss in pay.
I’m honestly thinking about trying to get back into pharma just for the job security. Hopefully you find my perspective helpful.
Post Covid consumer ad world is very bad. There’s so little business in the pipeline it’s seemed.
👆Listen to SAD1.
As someone who jumps back and forth to both pharma and general consumer, here’s my advice:
Stay in pharma and do your own non-advertising creative work on the side. We’re talking truly creative where you are your client. And any money you make will go to you and only you. Not shareholders
I HATE being in this industry, and deeply regret ever getting in. Leave if and when you can. The best thing that you used to be able to say about it was that it was stable - but even that's gone now.
