Unfortunately, you will have that experience in just about every corporate setting. My first run in public accounting I was the only POC in my office and it was isolating. Also, when going to clients it was also isolating because some tend to talk down to you as if you’re not capable. So please do not let that happen. My suggestion though is to find ways to connect with colleagues. You’ll sometimes find that there are supportive colleagues that are non-POC that are allies and will support you and help you advocate. In my experience, I had a non-POC manager at the time I started who always stood up for me in situations where things were going sideways so to speak in conversations with higher ups or whenever I was not present. Although I don’t need people to fight my battles I appreciate that someone else recognizes the subtle actions that are often taken. Also, my other suggestion is find a mentor (doesn’t have to be within the company) that also share similar experience. It makes it easier to navigate just hearing the experiences that others have gone through and how they got through it. I know it sounds cliché but this day in age it’s reality.
All I can do is second this advice. I’m often the only POC at some client meetings/events and even at industry events, the tax world is very white and I say that just stating facts, but we are here now adding more color every day! Own it, embrace it, you’re a trailblazer, sometimes that road is lonely, but you’re also leading by example, and that is something to be proud of!
You said “there are too many black people or POC. I’m the only one.”
What’s that mean?
Pretty sure they meant “aren’t”
Does your firm have an Employee Resource Group for Black employees? Are you in it? You're not the only accountant who feels like this. Network outside your direct team and you'll find your people. Or, go someplace bigger where there are more of us.
