The first few years in your career are about gaining exposure to the industry and building the foundation of strong career experiences. It is easy to identify large agencies. They are the case studies we are given to review in school and they help shape the narratives of hit TV shows and movies. Often times larger business opportunities for household brands are with the large agencies. It is also important to manage realistic expectations when you are first starting in you career.
My advice to undergraduates is to keep an open mind. Don't only narrow your search to the large shops. There are some incredible small and midsize agencies that can offer you great experiences and amazing brands to work on. Develop a list of experiences you want to gain that will help you reach your career goals in the future. Enter an agency hungry for opportunity, and work hard to be a team player. Spend time listening and learning from those who have found success in their careers. Seek out mentors who you aspire to be, and network. Often times in smaller agencies you will have the opportunity to wear many hats within the company; new business may be one aspect. You will also gain exposure to different areas within the agency, which can help determine what is the right fit for you. There may also be an opportunity to sit on an industry young professional board representing your company and helping the agency integrate deeper into the advertising community. There is a world of opportunity out there and this next generation entering the workforce will have a great potential to leave their mark.
Enjoy your final semester and good luck with your search!
Second that. (And great advice SMM1👆🏽). Large network agencies mean hierarchy, formality, and the expectation that you put in your “dues.” You will never be brought in to a pitch until 3 years in, min. Be more open minded about small shops, hybrid agencies, and media buying consultancies given where the industry is heading.
If you want biz dev to be later in life, where would you like to start? Your title says media, but is that what you want?
I started out in Media Buying/ Planning , and have found it invaluable to understanding the work we do in New Business agency Side.
