I'm in a market area at a boutique that competes (but still charges significant less than) big law. I was on track with my hours but recently got a wave of...serious burnout i guess with all of the little emergencies/quick turnaround things I was being assigned. We've done a docket overhaul and they've also offered for me to go to 1500 hrs (~80%) at $140k. Would you take it? I'm going to have about an hours hole of 100 after this month - fy ends in August. Looking at litigation firms tbh.

I doesn’t seem like you have an option since your docket was already overhauled, presumably to reduce your workload.

I would take the offer, get yourself together, and go back to a full docket in the next FY.

Patent prosecution is grind but gets easier with experience. What seems like an impossible workload now might be relatively easy with more experience. I used to spend hours researching questions from clients but rarely have to do it anymore. Those emergencies that you are facing might turn from an all day time suck to a 10 minute email exchange.

like

Good luck! I would still seriously consider taking the offer to reduce your workload if you cannot handle the pressure of a full docket. It’s not work the stress if you cannot handle it mentally.

Many firms would just cut you loose if you were not meeting hours. It seems that you have some good support at your current firm. That’s a great thing to have.

like

So it would normally be $175k for 1875 hours? What year are you? The lower amount seems okayish if you’re looking for WLB and are like 1-4th year

like

Yeah. 3rd year.

My firm is biglaw salary scale with 1800 hours. I think perhaps you could consider looking around for other opportunities if you’re being paid less than biglaw and working more

like

Are you mofo? That's the only biglaw firm I know with those hours for prosecution. Consider me interested if you're hiring but I know they don't take a lot of laterals
