If a parent is letting their kid buy anti-aging products, that’s on them, not the influencer.
For ours, when she asked, we explained to her the stage her skin was at and what she could and should use.
She’s using a gentle face wash, moisturizer, lip gloss and a sunscreen. That’s it.
Recently went to Sephora and in the 15 minutes I was there I saw two moms with their daughters (I'd assume under 10 or 10 at the most), buying multiple products, from some fairly expensive brands.
It's not my business how people spend money but it's crazy that 10 years are spending more than me, a 30 year old, on beauty products.
Money aside, it's crazy that young girls think they need make up. At that age I probably had a chapstick and a crappy "perfume". I feel like you only have so long to be a kid, you should make the most of it by actually being a kid. You have the rest of your life to do adult things like buying make up and multiple skincare products
Last time I was at Sephora, there was a group of tween girls looking at products and talking about how they “need this to fix that” and so on. It made me so sad. Those girls don’t need to “fix” anything but I’m sure they’ve been fed that idea by social media and the world around them.
It’s nothing new but that moment really made me take a step back and evaluate my role as a consumer in all of this and as someone who definitely gets “influenced.”
Sure, before social media we had magazines and TV but I fear that the influencer and makeup culture in the past 10 years has done serious damage to an entire generation. And it’s not getting better anytime soon.
Yeah agree with this. I feel like I definitely get "influenced" too, and did when I was younger but the difference was that back then you knew the people in magazines and on TV were celebrities and not just anyone. Now I feel like it's dangerous because it almost seems attainable to all, without actually being that way.
Not sure if that makes sense
We have an 11 and 9 year old daughters and it's f*cking hell honestly.
We argue about these things what feels like every weekend. All the Lol's and Bratz and Squishmellows are trash, they want "vanities" and "Sephora giftcards" "Stanley's" "Nike shoes, new ones every month" "Lululemon" "bronzing drops" "bubble products" "rare beauty".
That's been thier whole list for anything anymore!
They did get a few of these things for their most recent holiday gifts and my sister, their aunt, got them a little caboodle with what she felt was age appropriate make up; she thought my wife and I were being unreasonable. Since it wasn't the brands they think are cool the moment she left they begged my wife to take them and let them exchange it. They beg and plead and opt to use their birthday and Christmas or Easter money to buy stupid expensive (not like OUTRAGEOUS but toomuch for their age) every weekend.
Our boys, in club soccer (13 & 15), are so much more reasonable when it comes to this stuff. Sure they want certain brands and are kind of over toys other than video games for holidays but I would have never imagined that the same girls I was buying Lol's for last year have completely transformed. 3rd and 5th grade. Lord help us from here on out. Middle school doesn't even start til 6th grade here!
