Put that phone down and enjoy your vacation.
The company I work for actually has a policy specifically against checking emails in our off time and I still end up sneaking in to my email and catching myself up on the happenings because I am trying to keep my stress levels low on my vacation...and the anxiety of not knowing what is happening with my clients is not going to allow that...even if there's not good news, even if there's down right bad news in my emails, I find that my anxiety and stress goes down once I'm caught up on my emails, and I am better able to enjoy my vacation.
So yeah I checked my emails, and can totally relate.
yes im the same i need to know. I agree checking in allows me to relax more then not knowing and returning to total mayhem
Yes, and I am teaching myself not to, but failing
Same!
Typically no. I go on vacation and advise my team if they need me whilst away to WhatsApp me (I am sometimes oversees and may not have cellular and WhatsApp works over WiFi, therefore also on many planes).
If no one reached out, I do not read email whilst on vacation.
I feel it creates a negative outcome. If you read and worse respond to emails on vacation does that cascade an impression that you expect the same from your team whilst they are away on vacation. This impression is detrimental.
If you really need to do this… either (a) do not reply or (b) send replies with delayed delivery so they are actually sent when you get back from vacation. This could be at say 6am on the date of your return.
Some countries now have a “right to downtime”. Irrespective of local law, I would encourage that when on vacation you take the time to enjoy vacation, decompress. Come back strong. I would group it in the realm of sometimes we need to slow down to speed up.
No. The building and people will get there when you get back.
No!
I check my work email to stay informed while off
Absolutely not. I have set boundaries for my sanity. When I'm working, I go above and beyond, with 100%+ effort and I do the same when I'm on vacation. I am 100% in vacation mode. So no, I don't check work email while in my vacation.
It's not a vacation if you are working.
Yes and i try not to it happens to the best of us
Hear me out, you need help. Find a support group.
No don't do it - it's not worth your time or energy. Have enough trust in your co-workers or staff that they can figure out issue on their own. Just enjoy the vacation enjoying time alone or with friends or family.

I totally get it—hard to switch off sometimes! I used to, but learned the hard way that vacations are for recharging, not stressing. Try setting an “out of office” message and limit email checks to a set time if you really need to. You’ve earned that break—enjoy it!
I also send an email to anyone that would need to know about a week before I go on vacation and ask them to get me anything they need two days before my vacation starts so that I have time to work on it before I leave.
No. My time is my time. I work to live, not live to work.
Is this a job requirement or a personal choice? The first part of the word vacation is to 'vacate.' If you have downloaded the work email to your phone, uninstall it or disable that account (even if temporarily while on vacation). If it pops up that you have pending emails it becomes an unconscious trigger. I had one job where I was required to check emails, answer texts, etc. It wasn't very good because I never actually had time off. Maybe it's time to look for a company that respects you enough to let you get away.
Also, set an automated message on your work email account (most email systems have this setting - ask IT how that works) that you are out of the office, when you will return, and that you will respond after your return date. I also put on mine that I will respond in that first week (so people are not inundating me with calls 'did you get my email' 10 minutes after I sit down at the desk the first day back).
Hell No! Burn out is real!! For your own mental health, leave the email alone!!!
Japanese word, Karoshi, death by overwork is a global problem. I used to be under this classification working at the hospital 70 plus hours a week. Until I ended up on the hospital myself with a hypertensive event. I was able to take 3 months off and reprogram my life/work balance. Today I only work one FT job 3nights a week. Live below my means, saved 1 yr emergency fund, and no debt except the house. Going walking with my dog, spend quality time with my wife and 2 girls, and go fishing here and there. Thank God, I actually got a wake up call and I am not turning back! 👋
I used to. When I worked in a toxic and negative environment. But I’ve been in a much better environment for the past two years and it took me a while to get out of the habit. If you ever noticed leadership always goes on vacation and doesn’t check their emails so why should those of us who are not in leadership positions do that? I don’t know if you’re in a leadership position or not but either way you shouldn’t be checking your email when you’re on vacation!
Never ever no and no. De-values what time off is all about and sets a bad example. Turn off and put away all work tech then put the “vacate” in your “vacation”.
