My wife did this a few years ago when she worked in digital media. More editorial and less advertising, but similar circumstance. She chose the fulltime role for its benefits and responsibilities that matched her experience. The temp role was glorified intern work.
The staffing agency that placed her in the temp-to-perm role was pissed, chastised her for being unprofessional, and basically did their version of “you’ll never work in this town again.” All that despite her reminders that she was actively interviewing. I think that was more of a commission thing on their side, to be honest.
Sure, someone might be salty somewhere. But if the FT job is a more solid opportunity than having a carrot dangled for a permanent gig, then GTFO. It’s shittier to hold talented workers hostage with no intention to value them as people and provide some basic necessities in exchange for their time and effort.
If they are not willing to give you a full time role upfront, they are getting what they deserve. Just tell them the situation. And look out for yourself foremost
Just did that 2 months ago. Do what’s best for you and don’t look back. Think of it this way, the temp-perm company knew the risk they were taking when they didn’t hire you FT outright. You’re free game until someone puts a ring on it.
Also keep in mind that temp-perm is one of the oldest tricks in the book. I have had 4 out of 4 FL-FT jobs fall through after keeping me FL for almost a year at each. Shit happens and when it does FL are the first to get cut.
Be upfront. Which position do you want? If you like the current role ,Say that you really want a full time role and that one has been offered. Give them the opportunity to step up to the plate
Did this before and the recruiter and manager sent me an awful email saying I was an opportunist and took advantage of them. 🙄🙄🙄 A lot of those recruiters are only worried about their commissions, and their clients don’t want to fully commit. So because of that, they get what they deserve. I felt bad initially but came to my senses. They could have played me. They could have very well said they don’t want to hire me after the 3 month temp period. It’s ludicrous to think someone is going to stay loyal in that situation. They will be fine without me, but me without a job? Not so much.
Nothing is shitty if it's the right thing for your career. Put yourself first, 'cos you know that is what your company will do.
Be open and tell them what’s going on - they might offer you FT
Thanks for the input everyone !
