Is it just me?

Anytime I tell anyone — literally ANYONE — my medical diagnosis (ADD, inattentive type) they immediately respond with “omg I think I have that too!” because they like.. forget their keys occasionally.

My diagnosis actually really affects my life, and I find it so frustrating / minimizing when people respond this way. I don’t want to delegitimize what may be real medical concerns, so I always suggest they pursue a diagnosis if they feel it’s a problem but… come on. 😑

This is SO true and SO frustrating

I honestly think a lot of people are undiagnosed. That was the case for me. Didn’t get diagnosed until I was 40.

likesmart

Likely true! I wasn’t diagnosed until my early 20s, so I know this is really a struggle. Our parents’ generation is even more likely to have gone undiagnosed.

This happens more with people my age and younger, and I’m sure in same cases, it’s true. I do encourage them to talk to a healthcare provider if they think it’s an issue, but I also try to differentiate persistent symptoms from occasional forgetfulness. I’m definitely not in a position to evaluate anyone, of course.

like

Good idea to suggest they pursue a diagnosis. The truth is that a whole lot of people are diagnosed late in life, apparently the number is high for women in 40s and 50s.

So you share something personal about yourself…. And then someone else shares something personal about themselves, but you don’t like that they did that?

like

I get where you’re coming from, but it’s a trend that I think can be explained. There has been a massive increase in the awareness of the diagnosis, the diagnosis itself, and an increase in inattentiveness in general driven by tech.

Those of us who have been diagnosed (and had it since childhood) are on a spectrum ranging from being forgetful and/or hyperactive to being completely debilitated and can’t work at all. More and more of those who have mild symptoms are getting diagnosed in a quest to optimize our lives.

In my case, adhd has caused multiple accidents as well as put me in some precarious situations so it’s a safety thing for me. I don’t talk about it with anyone but my therapist and anonymously with others who struggle like you. It’s not well understood by people who don’t have it.

likesmart

Same. I ALWAYS recommend testing. It shows the more serious people you care and could trigger them getting diagnosed and treated, and it shows the joking people that it’s not something to joke about in a non confrontational way.

likesmart

If you’re a consultant I wouldn’t disclose your diagnosis. There is a lot of bias that exists and you don’t need to go there

I am indeed, but these conversations are with people I know well and personally, not at work. I’ve been at McK for about 5yrs now, and there isn’t crossover between those populations

How does this manifest for you? Are you medicated? Impressive that you are at McKinsey - you must manage it well.

There are definitely more people on it than likely need it. That said, there is a fair share of colleagues who are medicated due to legitimate conditions.

It’s frustrating to see people who may not need the meds taking them. It makes it harder for those that legitimately need them to get them, and it creates a stigma that if you’re taking it, it’s somehow not legitimate.

Still, I can’t assess whether someone’s need is “real” or not, so it’s hard to know.

Let me guess they also say - making lists is good 😂

I can make a list but forgetting about the list or ignoring the list is my downfall.

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

How do you deal with the following - 1) lack of general organization in life, note taking, keeping track of your relationships and 2) attention to detail. These 2 things have been bothering me a lot. We all are smart as hell but silly mistakes such as spelling mistakes, broader checks to be done on the deck is killing me. Also I feel the lack of organization in personal life blows into professional as well. If you are a consultant how do u deal with it ?
