I take both Vyvanse and Adderall IR every day (Vyvanse in the morning, and an Adderall later in the day to ensure I can still be productive in the evening). The Vyvanse dosage is a bit lower than it otherwise would be so the total stays reasonable.
By Adderall ER I assume you mean Adderall XR, the extended release version. It's going to be pretty similar to Vyvanse, with two main changes:
- Due to the way Vyvanse's time-release mechanism works, it's slower to start acting and lasts a bit longer than Adderall XR.
- Adderall XR contains l-amphetamine in addition to d-amphetamine (just like IR). The L isomer is generally considered less active, but some studies have shown it to have some beneficial effect. Vyvanse is entirely d-isomer.
Frankly, I don't notice much qualitative difference between the IR and the Vyvanse besides the onset and duration effects, so I wouldn't expect big changes going from XR to Vyvanse.
One caveat is the dose. If you keep the total moles of amphetamine constant and go from XR to Vyvanse, you'll get more D isomer in exchange for zero L isomer. If the D isomer is what is providing the positive benefit to you, that's, in effect, a higher dose of the useful part. So depending on how your doctor calculates an equivalent dose you may see some benefit there.
my sister has taken both and she said that vyvanse is what worked best for her. I couldn't take Vyvanse because my insurance doesn't cover it. So I have been on adderall for some time now but have always been curious if Vyvanse might work better.
