Just found out a junior associate at my firm just got fast-tracked to senior associate. Apparently, he’s been grabbing weekly drinks with a partner, and now they’re calling it “mentorship.” My promotion packet has been sitting in limbo for three months. I always thought merit spoke louder than politics, but I’m starting to feel like I’ve been sold a lie. Is this just how the game works, or am I being naive thinking performance alone should matter?

Is this a good rating?. My manager said they won't give SSS to anyone unless they are a promotion candidate. Why do they have to reduce the rating just because of that?

I am an senior associate at a small (8-10 attorneys) immigration firm in NYC. My base is 110k and I get 30% for the cases and clients I bring in. My revenue was 370k last year and I did 250k till April this year.

My issue is, I have so much firm's work that I have hard time to work on my cases/clients. It feels like my cases are supposed to be done after hours (like after 6 pm). My work hours are crazy. I feel this is unfair and since my firm's taking 70% of my sales. Should I ask for a raise?

I have been promised a promotion three times now, but when the time comes, I'm told I'm not there yet. Why promise something if you clearly don't want to execute it?

I'm not in sales per se but I manage my company's largest wholesale account ($150 million per/yr account). It's a great company, awesome culture, good benefits, flexibility, but the pay is not great ($60K/yr). What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? Random/odd question if anyone knows the answer: if you are a corporation in state A (California), can you operate as a sole proprietorship in State B (Massachusetts), and have your website list the name of your company and both states in which you operate? Asking for civil procedure purposes in Massachusetts and wondering if the State A Corp is an unregistered foreign Corp in State B that I can tattle on. Polling the audience!
