Unfortunately, this happens more often than it should. Relationship-building can open doors, but that doesn’t mean your hard work is invisible. You might want to consider having a candid conversation with your mentor or partner about where your promotion stands and what’s needed to move forward.

Merit is a big part of it but playing the game has always been present too (so yes you’re being naive if you think the former is all you need).
What you describe is a great example of mentorship, especially if they are regular in their meetings and the other associate is implementing the discussion points into her/his practice.
Wholeheartedly agree with P1. If two associates have pretty equal work but I know one better than the other and believe they have the ability and drive to be a rainmaker, guess who id want as a partner?
Sorry to say, you're being naive
I’m not sure why you think seeking mentorship is not part of merit. The point of mentorship is to get better, and the partners can teach that with time. People don’t get drinks for no reason—the people who do that become better teammates and practitioners.

Premise 1: Mentorship is necessary to become a better lawyer.
Premise 2: Partners can mentor you while you are both drunk
Conclusion: If partners don’t choose to drink with you, you are not a good lawyer.
