With IRS experience and the trend that public accounting is losing people, I think you will be in demand.
I think it would depend on whether the work you do for the IRS is similar to the role you want in 3-5 years. If it’s very different they probably won’t hire you back as an SM.
Just curious, are you a JD? GS14 as a senior is really good IMO.
Nope, CPA.
You would easily be able to go back to public
What do you want to do long term?
Ideally, I would like to stay at the IRS long-term but realize I'd likely have higher earning potential on the outside. I would also be interested in working in tax controversy in an industry position.
I'm unhappy in my current position and looking for a change. My unhappiness stems from the environment/people rather than the work I'm doing. I'm feeling extra burnt out lately so the IRS work-life balance sounds appealing.
I work for the government now but not for the IRS. If you want to connect with me feel free to send a DM
The government doesn't have departments lol. Divisions within Federal Agencies have departments. I work within the DoD.
I think going from senior associate to GS-14 is rare. I worked at the IRS National Office and left as a GS-13 for a manager position at PwC. If you stay at the IRS for at least a few years and come back to PA, I think you could easily get a SM position. Waiting to be promoted to manager in September won’t make a difference.
I didn't realize that SA to GS-14 was a big jump. Appreciate your input!
Would definitely take. Forget about public lol you’ll get that sweet pension and amazing WLB.

That’s what I’m thinking. I’ve heard it’s very hard to get into the IRS so I’d jump at the chance in that position.
