Moving half of my parents’ life savings from a bank account where they’ve kept it for 10+ years (they wanted to buy a house) to a brokerage account to invest it. They’re in their 60s and don’t make enough to afford a monthly mortgage in CA. I don’t want the money to keep wasting away on 3-4% interest and think they can make more by investing. How would you move the money quickly without triggering some fraud alert? It’s legitimately their money which I’m transferring from savings to brokerage.

Brokerage account should be in their name/s.
You can be granted power of attorney if appropriate.
Don’t worry so much about moving it “quickly”
A month or two more at 3% isn’t losing much.

Also think carefully about how much risk you take.
If you invest in S&P and market falls 25% next month is everyone going to feel OK with that?

I’ve moved six figure amounts from my bank account to brokerage account. No fraud warnings. People move huge sums of money all the time. It’s fine. Open the brokerage account in the same name as the bank account, set up transfer between accounts, transfer money. Setting up the transfer might take a couple days, they often will send some small transfer and you have to report the amount of the transfer to confirm the connection.

Has anyone just taken a break from work without anything lined up? Every offer I’ve gotten wants me to start in a month and with 2 weeks notice that leaves me only 2 weeks to recharge. For my mental health I really think I need an extended break (like 3 months). I have about 60k liquid to sustain myself and pay about $1500 a month in rent.

What’s the general guidance on the order to maximize retirement contributions for tax benefits for an normal individual and for a self employed/small business owner before moving to taxable accounts or alternate vehicles like cash value life policies?
I’ve seen for individual: match trad 401k->match roth 401k->max roth IRA->max trad IRA->max trad 401k->max roth 401k->max HSA
For self employed: max SEP IRA/solo 401k->max roth IRA->max trad IRA->max HSA

Of course situations differ but in general?

I’m maxing out my 401K, traditional IRA and HSA this year and paying for some house improvements. I have about $750K total investments and very close to $2M net worth, but realize that I am behind on investments if I want to do FIRE. I was focused on paying off huge chunks of my mortgage and managed to whittle it down to $75K left. Would you suggest I go ahead and pay that off this year? Or pause and do a mega back door roth instead? I’m mid 40s. Thanks!

I spent the last 3 months "growing up" & now I'm ready to go. 1st thing is for me to get my own place. I'd like to buy instead of rent because I don't want to pay someone else's mortgage.

I'm thinking of selling my car & cash out some of my 401k to buy a house. My thought is to put down 3.5% for a FHA loan then make a big payment towards the principal to reduce long-term interest.

Under contract for nearly 1.1M. Wife and I are at HHI $315k. Will go up in the future, $400k in 3 years and $500k possible in 5-7 years. We have $300k in non-retirement funds, $260k of which will go towards acquiring the house. We have 2 kids and will probably reduce (not maxing) retirement accounts next 18 months to do this. Anyone have any thoughts or feedback? We’ll have to live on a budget and watch but I feel we’ll get used to it and income will grow.

I racked up about $20k in credit card debt due to a confluence of things happening at once (move, school expenses , etc ). I have a fair amount of paper assets but not a much free cash. Assets are down a decent amount with the current market cycle and I’d prefer not to sell them to cover the debt , although they easily could. Any suggestions how to handle the credit card debt without racking up tons of ongoing card interest?
