I made the decision to move to industry for exactly this reason. From going slug-hunting with my young boys, to supervising their latest crazy common core math homework, to ensuring both get a bedtime smoochie kiss, hug, and tuck in, spending quality family time with them is my routine - *every single night* since leaving consulting. Can't say that I've looked back on my career change with regret :)
That’s why I bounced. Down to 50% travel now and working on relo that will whack that to 30% (week a month + week a quarter). Big raise too.
I have a zero travel job and work from home. But my 2yo first word when he wakes up is “daddy busy” because I’m usually on the phone already.
There’s no winning with these little ones :)
Ouch. I get similar ones too, “you always go away”...”I don’t want daddy to go on an airplane again”. By far worst part of the job, and the part the realllllly makes you second guess your choices.
I’m already at less than 50% travel... not sure what else to do other than get a zero travel job
I quit. Do consulting in a big city now with focus on FI. I have zero travel. No amount of money is worth the pain we out our kids through
3yo seem harsh. Mine says “daddy, can’t you just go to work”
My 2yo give me the “you no go to work, you stay with meee?”
And when that doesn’t work it’s “I come to work with youuu? Get my bag?”... heartbreaking every time
