It’s ok to ask what the topic is so you can prepare for the meeting. If it’s “just an update” suggest a weekly so you can be prepared.
Some people just like to talk, and this kind of random scheduling is indicative that it’s an afterthought or they are just trying to keep an appearance of managing you when they don’t otherwise know how
What do you guys usually talk about during those meetings?
Would regular check-up calls help mitigate the issue? Daily goal-setting calls? Wrap-up emails or a shared doc to coordinate project progress?
This isn’t normal in my experience. You can ask your manager to provide more context and frame it as trying to be proactive and prepared. However, you may not be able to control the exact time, because your manager may have a busy schedule.
I don't think there is anything wrong with askinf for more structure or even just an agenda ahead of time on what the meating will cover. Theres no harm in asking what the topic of the meeting is.
Every week, look at the next week’s calendar and set blocks of focus time for whatever time of day you feel most productive and/or when you want to go heads down. Don’t just name the block “focus time”—could be “focus time: work on X report” or “DNS: working on X report.”
If your manager is a decent person, they’ll check your calendar before scheduling and will respect the blocks.
If they’re not (I suspect this is the case if they’re constantly hitting you with no-agenda meetings), when they schedule time that you already have blocked, decline the meeting, suggest a new time that works for you, and write in your response, “Hi—I had blocked time to work on X project during the time you suggested, but I can meet at [other time] instead. Looks like you’re free but LMK if you prefer another time.”
It makes it a lot harder for them to demand you have a random meeting with them during time you had blocked out with a note on what you planned to work on.
