As a Chief of Police, you have firsthand experience and knowledge of the dangers associated with high crime rates, and your concerns for your son's safety are valid. Here are a few suggestions on how to communicate your concerns to your son:
Share your experiences: Talk to your son about the dangers you have seen in your line of work and the experiences you have had dealing with crime. Explain to him that your concern for his safety is based on your professional experience and your love for him.
Provide statistics: Research and provide your son with the statistics on crime rates in the area where the college is located, including incidents that have occurred on or near the campus. This can help him understand the extent of the danger.
Suggest alternative colleges: Discuss alternative colleges that may offer the same programs or opportunities that he is interested in but are located in safer areas.
Involve other trusted adults: Seek the support of other trusted adults in your son's life, such as your spouse, family members, or his high school counselor. Hearing the same concerns from multiple sources may help your son understand the gravity of the situation.
Encourage campus visits: If possible, encourage your son to visit the campus and its surrounding area before making a decision. This can help him see firsthand the environment he would be living and studying in.
Ultimately, it is important to have an open and honest conversation with your son about your concerns for his safety. While it can be difficult to convince a teenager to change their mind, it is important to continue to communicate your concerns and provide them with all the necessary information to make an informed decision.
Tell him to NOT go to Temple… there are much better options. The school may be nice but it is a war zone there.
