Keep the below points in mind while taking a Health insurance:
1. Coverage: 5L(Individual) / Family Floater - 10L and has Restoration benefit.
2. No Room Rent Cap
3. No Sub Limits(limit for few diseases)
4. Pre and Post Expenses coverage period
5. Has OPD? Good to have
6. No CoPay
7. Has NCB?
8. Go for Super top-up plan - Good to have
9. Waiting period/Cooling period - if any existing diseases
Bonus:
1. Filter the policy either based on Highest settlement ratio or Cashless Network Hospital count. Use policy bazar portal for comparison.
2. Mention all the pre existing ailments in prior. Don't hide anything to reduce the premium balance.
3. Select yearly payment method instead of Monthly EMI to avoid the chances of missing the payment.
4. Don't go for reimbursement for small amounts. NCB will not be applicable in that case.
5. Don't include parents in family floater plan if age > 50 which increases the premium amount. Consider taking a separate plan for the parents.
6. Take Health Insurance in early age.
Hope this helps in opting the right Health Insurance.
If you want to take a health policy other than the employer provided then go for HDFC ERGO OPTIMA SECURE sum insured 5 Lakh.
HDFC Ergo is the best health insurance policy with the highest claim settlement ratio.
As per my personal experience HDFC ergo is having less query from the insured member while claim settlement and do claim settlement within 2-3 hrs.
This review is based on my personal experience in the current year.
Hdfc ergo Optima Restore and Optima secure both are good choose as per your budget
Please check HDFC ERGO Optima secure. It has really good benefits. Like if you take 5L sum assured plan and at the same moment it doubles to 10L without additional premium. There are quite a few other benefits as well.
I had compared HDFC Ergo Optima Secure and Max Bupa Reassure for 10 lacs family floater (myself, spouse and 1 kid). Selected MaxBupa which later became NivaBupa Reassure.
Niva bupa looks colourful and nice
HDFC Ergo Optima Secure or New India Floater Mediclaim Policy
You can easily compare plans at Policy Bazaar (But please do not type your Actual mobile number, just enter some fake number and name, enter your gender age etc correctly and you can get to the comparison screen) I opted for Niva Bupa ReAssure plan since I saw things like no room rent cap etc.

If you are working for TCS then TCS mediclaim plan is good specially for senior citizens parents. I left tcs but I continued same insurance for entire family .
How much was the premium??

I read through that Glassdoor thread, and it instantly took me back to the phase when I was searching for “the best health insurance plan” for my entire family — parents included. The mix of suggestions, insurer names, and conflicting advice in that discussion feels so familiar. You start with a simple question, and suddenly it becomes overwhelming because everyone has a different experience, sometimes even with the same policy.
My own wake-up call came during a hospitalization in my family. Until then, I believed that choosing a trustworthy insurer and a high sum insured was enough. But inside the hospital, the reality felt very different. Approval timelines, hidden structural limits, differences in how hospitals behave in your PIN code, and insurer-specific claim patterns shaped the entire experience. None of this shows up in brochures or comparison charts — and that’s exactly the gap I sensed in the Glassdoor conversation too.
After that episode, I stopped looking for the “best plan” and started looking for clarity. What finally helped me was understanding my policy’s actual real-world strength. BimaScore became that anchor — a simple 400–1000 clarity rating that tells you how strong your coverage truly is. Behind it is Bima Analyze, which studies over 100 real-life factors: local medical costs, insurer stability, claim behaviour for families like yours, and structural strengths or weaknesses in the plan. You don’t upload documents — you just provide basic details, and it gives you a grounded, human-readable assessment.
Seeing my own score didn’t push me to replace anything. It simply helped me understand what my plan could realistically handle and what it couldn’t — something I wish I had known much earlier, especially when planning coverage for parents.
If that thread left you wondering how strong your own policy really is, you can Discover Your Score here:
