@PE-Y: the first year is predominantly PE for most people because the skills you need for diligence can be built rapidly and are transferable. If you don't enjoy PE I think the primary approach is maintaining relationships with CTLs you work with who do pureplay strategy also. Tell them that you want to do strategy in their industry segment and offer every few weeks to help with CDA or thought leadership. It keeps you on their radar, which is what you need to get staffed on non-PE work. It will happen eventually! I understand being frustrated with PE if it's not your area of interest, but the rapid skill development will pay off!!
Hey there- what level are you? I can't exactly relate since am a recent hire but am definitely feeling this wasn't the firm/work I was promised and want to move out as well
Strategy practice prob not the solution. @OP and PEY1 The people make all the difference though, and there are great people around. Talk to them. They'll help you (I would)
@P-EY I've been here a bit longer but sympathize with your class. I think in some of the EY offices especially people were promised something they aren't getting and it's not an equitable experience across offices, which is compounded by post-merger growing pains. But just find the CTLs and Partners who you get along with and try to work with them!
OP- I appreciate the sentiment. I am in one of the offices you're talking about and the first few months have been a disaster for logistics and more. I'm actually an associate so relationships with partners/CTLs aren't as frequent.. Especially in this office. Trying to make the best of the situation and do good work. I had a question for you- have projects always been extremely focused on PE? And does it vary by office?
No worries, hope that helps a bit! I'm sorry you're not having a great experience; reach out to the second and third years around you whenever you need it. The people around me are the only way I got through first year. Good luck!
You could also try switching out of TAS and into the Strategy practice in Advisory. I'm sure we'd be glad to cross-pollinate and it might assuage some of the merger issues

Thanks for the advice. Sorry to hijack your thread. Hopefully you find the answer you're looking for on here too.
