I wasn’t formally a copywriter, but I ghostwrote for other creatives when I worked in the production department. (They’d present my ideas and I’d build a portfolio.) It was a very helpful experience because as a strategist, I need to know that my insights can translate conceptually. When I read other strategy briefs, I evaluate it as a creative. Is the insight too high-minded and therefore, impossible to execute or is it so pedestrian that no creative will feel excited working on it? A good brief should communicate an idea that feels so fresh that a creative can, at first glance, already imagine all the different possibilities. Having a way with words is helpful, but you also have to have the rigour to know the difference between a strategy and creative line. But in general, wearing different hats means being more equipped to empathize with your colleagues so you can smooth out problems ahead of time.
Tl;dr, it’s very beneficial.
Being good with words is definitely a positive.
