When I was studying for the exams I had that problem. I found that (in May-Oct) if you just stop working at 5:00 or 5:30 (your office's close of business) and say "I've got to study now. CPA exam in two weeks." And you proceed to study right in front of their face for 5 hours, night after night, they will back off.
Passing the exam is a personal achievement. Why would the firm pay you to study for the exam? Plenty of people took it while working and found a way to get it done. Why should they give you special treatment?
Eh if you want to pass it you will find a way. I use to work 7-7 then go home and study for two hours. Does it suck? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes
Sounds like a personal problem
@EY2 you're spot on. If it's slower time, just take it upon yourself to go study. If there's no urgent work then there's no issue. If you're unlucky and are busy year round, that's just life. Learn to get through it. End of the day it is each of our responsibility to be licensed. When I was studying for the exam I had no personal life. Work, study, sleep, repeat. You've got to be willing to make sacrifices to succeed in life. If that means giving up your social life for 6 months while you pursue a personal achievement that will enhance your career so be it. Demanding the firm give you enough time to have a personal life and study just makes you sound entitled.
I agree that you should prioritize your job. I noticed that I was expected to put in 60-70 hours a week Jan 15-May15 during my first busy season, and that I could continue at that rate if I felt the need to prove myself. However, when I noticed things were slowing down I made sure it was acceptable to only put in 8 hours a day during the summer and switch off to study mode at close of business. That worked for me. It's all about communication.
Right but how is it ok if the person giving you the work leaves at 4 to go play sports or go to the gym while they know you need to study and yet want you to stay doing the work so they don't have to. I'm all for the job and put it first always but I think teams need to be sensitive to it, especially in divisions where CPA isn't required and something like CISA is accepted too
I'm saying get your work done then go study. Very few things at work are extremely urgent when it's slow time. I have a bunch of staff who just sit at work because others are there when they have no actual work to do and do it for appearances. Not a single one of my managers, senior managers, or partners care if a staff is sitting at work for no reason doing nothing when they could be at home studying. Proper planning at work and for studying goes a long way. It is possible to be accommodating to people's studying and for everyone to pull their weight.
Agreed EY2 I think as long as everyone pulls their own weight it's fine, it's just frustrating when that's not how it works and studying takes the hit for it
I think once you're a bit more seasoned you will start to understand. Basically it comes down to engagement economics. Staff bill at around $150 per hour. Seniors are over $250 and managers are over $400 and senior managers are over $500. It doesn't make sense to move work from a $150 billable rate to a $400 billable rate. This just fucks with the realization of the engagement. This is why you might see tasks being assigned to staff while the manager goes to the gym. Not trying to be a dick here, just trying to explain to you how the business side of public works.
@SA-A1 I feel like it's unreasonable to make sweeping generalizations about an entire generation. We're on the forum to discuss things we're uncertain about, right?
@SA-A1 I fully agree with that last post
@EY2 it's not the firms responsibility to make life fair. Of course it's valuable to the firm to have licensed CPAs and I'm not suggesting that teams should be dicks about the exam just for the fuck of it, but if you really are busy because of a business need that's just the way things are. Some staff will be busier than others, some had to work through college and have to take exams while working while others can have mommy and daddy support a year off for studying. That's just life man. Everyone is dealt a separate set of cards and has to play their hand the best they can.
Would Investment in highly rated employees mean anything?
^ well said!
If someone leaves at 4 but has already worked 7-4 does that mean they shouldn't be able to go to the gym? I mean typically certain tasks are meant for the staff, others for seniors, other work is more likely to be completed by managers. Just be cognizant of that...and know that your supervisor should be understanding if you say "I'm not going to get to these tasks until tomorrow/Thursday/next Tuesday"
Lol I mean I'm totally fine, I work absurd hours all year round, get work thrown at me from all directions and I've passed two of my exams despite all that. So by no means can I "not handle it" I think people just need to be more respectful of what's going on that's all I'm saying
I'm not dumb, I understand all of that but what if there are staff on your team sitting idle same level as you and they're leaving at 4 o'clock, there's a huge difference, I'm not just speaking about managers, seniors, etc
Somebody's a little bitter....
Yeah well I have those hours right now too.. Actually all year round since I started.. Perks of a big team/client and client expansion but not team expansion
