I do it pretty religiously M-F (16:8) I even end up fasting longer just because if busy I’ll forget to eat - so I end up taking in one larger meal a day as opposed to a few smaller ones. Definitely difficult to get over the hump initially but I find it smooth sailing for the most part.
Same.. GT1
I do a 7-14 day fast every year (length depends on personal schedule). During that time all I consume is water and maybe some herbal tea with honey or gum if I feel hungry. Honestly, hunger goes away after day 3 and pretty easy to keep going after that. Food starts to smell amazing though.
Really good to give the body time to rest and regenerate without the stress of digestion. Also helps me to drop/reset the 5-10 lbs that I might have gained over the past year.
Tbh, the first 3 days are the toughest and gets much easier after that. Kind of a runners high. Most don’t last the 3 days....
I did a 72 hour fast, but that was during college. And I was broke
Might as well say your starving yourself if you fast for 72 hours.
I lost 15 lbs on intermittent fasting in a 2 month period but gained it all back. It works short term but not long term (unless you're going to fast for the rest of your life)
100% agreed. Making your body go through a shock means that it would start storing everything you eat in a form of fat once you stop fasting.
The reason intermittent fasting works is because you are eating below maintenance calories. It has nothing to do with the fact you are fasting. Although there is some research to support that fasting increases weight loss, that is a very small part of it. There’s not need to fast 24, 48 or 72 hours. It will cause more harm than good.
This is totally false. Fasting does not cause harm.
You should check out Dr Peter Attia’s podcast “The Drive”. He has done extensive research on fasting and longevity and has many guests on the podcast to discuss it.
Lots of people commenting with no knowledge of fasting. Dr. Peter Attia is a fantastic resource for those wanting to learn more.
There is a variation of IF called the warrior diet where you eat for 4 hours and fast for 20hrs to make looking up articles easier. Another is called the eat stop eat diet where once a week you fast for one or two days. I have been doing IF for 3 years and still see benefits even now, have lost weight and kept it off. Giving yourself at least 12 hrs of gut rest everyday at least can give you plenty of health benefits. So even if you don’t do a normal 16:8 IF schedule doing a 12hr fast daily can definitely help you in the long run!
Was going to say I started doing something similar. It's been amazing because I eat one really big meal (short person here so very limited calories) but still get the feeling of being satiated. I also don't crave snacking so not getting extra calories that way. Finally, I can cook big meals since its not very often.
Pro
I did 48 hour fasts on and off for a few months and then did two 4.5 day fasts. All the weight came back plus 20 extra and I wasn’t binging or anything. I read up on it a lot and believed in it but it was all a mental game and honestly it wasn’t worth it. Now I jsut do two meals a day and focus a lot on the quality of food and try to get in a lot of veggies. I’ve lost 20 pounds and my body feels healthy. If I do a cheat day I can bounce right back and I barely gain weight if any. When you fast and then you eat again you out your body through hell. I had diarrhea like 10 times and I was super careful about the refeeds. It’s just not worth it especially when the weight loss doesn’t stay the second you eat again.
Here is an interesting article with before and after blood tests for someone who did a 3 week fast. I have gotten similar results..

A once obese 456 lbs man has the record of 382 days fasting without any food, went down to 180 lbs.
People can easily last a few weeks without any ill effects as long as you have fat on your body.
It works if you are at a calorie deficit. That’s what you need to lose weight. Doesn’t matter if you eat at a 6:18 window, 18:6 or all day
So I do a 24 hour fast once a month. It’s not hard. Resets your body
Mormons also do this once a month

More interested in the long term effects and the idea of a “cleanse”. Not too concerned with weight loss since I exercise regularly. I’m sure there are diets around that could act as a replacement
I have eaten on a 20:4 schedule for the last 18 months. No issues, and I lost weight initially. Now it’s just maintenance, and I don’t miss the extra meal. I’ve done a few 24 hour fasts without issue.
