Say you’re an Assurance Senior 3 and want to transfer soon as you hit Manager back to your hometown office. Should you secure the manager promotion at your current office first or go ahead and initiate the transfer at S3? I’m scared that they won’t accept me over their current S3s and so I think the safer bet is to make manager first then transfer. Deloitte EY PwC
Also, how desperate are firms for Managers these days? I know seniors and staff are in demand but I rarely hear about Managers.

No, I tried this at PwC and wasn't able to get a compensation match. They offered me a retention bonus but not a comp increase.
So I thanked them for all of the fish and flew off into space.
Could have been worse ... You could have been the bowl of petunias or the whale.
I’ve seen comp matches but not that big of an increase. Are you also asking if the firm will match your status, i.e. promote you to SM if you are not already set to be promoted in the upcoming cycle? Also do you see yourself on partnership track at your current firm? Do you see a clearer path to partnership at RSM? All questions that you have to ask yourself. If you like your group and see a partnership path, any money lost may be made up to you later as a partner at a B4.

I would not pass this opportunity. The bump is too significant unless you see a clear path to partner at current firm.
This is exactly what I was going to say. I am not sure where you are or what tax service line you are in, but if someone is offering that sort of bump you take it. If your current firm likes you as much as they say then they will match it. If they don’t even try then they were blowing smoke with the partnership track story.
While many will advise that a person should think long term on their employment with a specific organization, in reality your focus should be on your own long term growth and development, regardless of where you are. Honestly, who knows what will happen in the next 2-4 years. If some offers you $200K now versus a promise of $220 K in 2-4 years, the $200K is worth more to you. Also, early promote to SM now gives you more options in industry at an earlier period, if you choose to go that route.

Take it bro. Lap up that bro Adam's money. We hire terrible people all the time and pay them way more than our home grown folks.
RSM1 - if you're saying that's really happened that's many times, sounds like you're recruiting/HR Department needs to get it together and better screen new additions to your firm.
Edit - that director sounds like he's living a nice life
If you really love your group and would otherwise stay ask for what they can do to match but tell them it’s too good an opportunity to pass up if their response isn’t enough.
I am doubtful any company matches that much increase though.
My only hesitation would be the expectation jump from manager to senior manager. Are you ready for the increase in responsibility, including the need to sell work? If so, go for it.
I went from RSM to PWC, haven’t regretted it. I really did love RSM but wanted big4 exp(may sound corny but I did), but never closed the door on returning. I def work more and have more responsibilities at PWC, obviously this is highly team/group dependent. But I am in same situation as you, if I was offered a promotion back to RSM, let alone a 55% jump, I’d go! I’ll say I find the benefits in big4 to be a little better for retirement and healthcare, and now I have a free phone. There’s pros and cons but a promotion and huge raise to me, I’d take it! And congrats !
Always worth asking your firm, but doubt they would match a 55% increase. On the flip side, RSM will likely not be giving you big raises going forward because of the 55% increase. So the question is, how long at your current firm would you have to stay to get to the same salary at RSM? And then what is the plan for the additional cash you earn at RSM earlier than at your current firm?
If you think you’ll be promoted to SM in a year and then you’ll be making the same comp, it may be worth staying. If it’s going to be 2+ years, then probably worth jumping (because time value of money and all that).
M&A practice at RSM is very solid. Most folks are very bright.
55% is a great raise.
What year manager at B4?
You could also just go to a casino and bet it all on black.
Wow! Congrats!
I say do it!! Totally worth communicating this to the firm and asking them to recognize your value!! Retention adjustments are a thing, people just don’t talk about it.
What are you at now? 115-130?
Very rare that someone would manage 10 deals at a time at RSM. 3-5 is the norm.
Similar experience. If they like you and need you, they’ll match it. If they don’t, go to RSM because you’re about to get a fat raise
Stay at B4
I am thinking of similar move from Big4 to BDO. They did agree to raise and SM promotion. Only deal is that I’ve been at 3 different firms in six years. Wah wah.
I would do it. No regertz
Yes. Simply notified leadership of my plans to resign, they wanted to keep me and told them a key factor was comp. They offered to instantly match the competing offer (didn’t negotiate further from there though).
OP, where are you located? A 55% increase is pretty good.
Take the money and run!
