Does MBB really change your exits? If not stay where you are $20K isn’t worth it. Plus, you need to consider salary growth. Sounds like your current gig is actually sustainable so you can stay a good while and get a bigger title before you jump.
Yes mbb would definitely change my exits. Current firm isn't as well known so not nearly as exciting of exit opps
$145k is already pretty good money for 35-40 hours. With 2 kids, that sounds very enticing.
Is working 30+% more hours worth a 15% salary increase? To me, no. But I value free time more than a small salary increase
What about opportunities to spend time with your children? They won’t be this age ever again.
Our most valuable resource is not our money, but our time

Take the hours, I would want a 50% pay bump for a 50% bump in hours
Rising Star
Yeah that’s true, just depends on your priorities. Personally I don’t want the stress of chasing the absolute max salary I can get over the long haul... probably why I’m still at gartner

One you can answer that, you know your financial situation and what life you want to have
Maybe consider the effect in your overall happiness.
Jump MBB associate role and find the projects where you work 40-50 hours 🤣

What are your goals in life?
Ideally I retire early (before 50) which means I need to make as much money as I can between now and then. MBB obviously offers that but I'd be sacrificing quality time with family, which makes the decision hard

The first option without a doubt
70k in student loans and a mortgage is what's driving this
In the same boat but 30. I’d jump to mbb wife takes care of the rest. You’ll have more options transitioning.
Stay at home wife and kids you never see. Her second husband thanks you for the Dolby Atmos upgrade.

MBB for a few years, then exit. You'll have more options.
Similar situation here OP but don’t have MBB offer in hand yet. My wife and I made a set of agreements prior to the application process. There’s no doubt about the career/comp progression though so MBB for a few years then exit.

MBB. It’ll be hard, but you’ll likely be grateful for the choice you’ve made 3-5 years down the road.
The earning potential, exit opportunities, and learning experience is unbeatable (within consulting). I’d hate spending less time with the kiddos, but I’d also hate not knowing I didn’t take the opportunity to set them up for success financially.
*this is operating on the assumption that career growth (i.e. salary jumps) at the boutique is lower and the exit oops are meh.
Your asterisk is spot on.

With your family, I'd stay and be around to watch my kid grow up.
Do it. I am seeking a much higher jump for the same reason but I am a lot older too. I need a 50% hike to put up with the hours, and both spouses owe a lot of student loans.
As a parent, I must tell you to take the first option. There is no way $20k is worth the extra ~30hrs considering that may be an underestimate on a given week.
I would suggest option 3: go to another boutique firm at 35-40 hours with 165k base (or whatever number, the same package as MBB for you). Then keep eyes on position at big tech company
Any recommendations?
