Hi fishes! I volunteer with The Art of Good, a creative collective helping small businesses affected by the pandemic. They are seeking a little help from a media professional. Need an SEM POV for a small business looking to change their name and relaunch their brand. This is non-paid. More about giving back while in-between gigs. :) If you can help out or want to learn more, please reach out to me via LinkedIN. Thank you!! www.linkedin.com/in/karenkohn/

If you feel strong about your creative process there’s no need for portfolio school. You could pick 10 hot brands and create 10 cool spec campaigns yourself, and ask people you trust for feedback. And if you are willing to step back to a jr title to make the transition, that should help you a lot. But then again, maybe you’re well rounded enough to make the transition while keeping the same title. Follow your guts and don’t underestimate yourself, you can surely do it.
if you can avoid a portfolio school, do. denver is the most affordable (bad rep tho), brandcenter is arguably the better of what’s out there, and miami ad school could be worth it since they do quarters - but you may not always be paired with an AD that’s good. what you could do while you’re making your decision is to join the group Make Ads Withs Me on FB and find yourself a solid partner and, in tandem, poke around here on fishbowl for a mentor. best of luck!
I got out of pharma without going to portfolio school and didn’t have to make a lateral move either. I would recommend taking a class at SVA if you’re in NYC, or something similar if elsewhere, to get a better handle on concepting big ideas and use the spec campaigns you come up with in class when you apply to jobs.
I also furthered my conceptual chops in pharma by participating in a ton of pitches. My agency was always going after new business so I had many opportunities to concept without having to worry about legal and regulatory at such early stages.
Another thing that helped me was interviewing with and working for CDs who used to work in pharma but switched to consumer as well. They understand the challenges and the skills you can bring to the table.
S1, yes I had one of the teachers from Droga and he was great!
CW1, I was in pharma for about a year and a half. I ended up taking a sort of transitional job in between my pharma gig and my switch to a full general market agency. I went to a small shop that did lot of websites and some B2B work which fit well with my experience. But they were also always pitching big idea campaigns so I was able to add to my book there and get hired at a general agency. It wasn’t a short road for sure, but it is doable.
Maybe take a few courses but don't think you need a full load. My best guess is to create spec work, take pharma off your resume, and apply to jobs down a level. I've also been trying to get out of pharma.. it's not easy.
